Chapter 5 - Shadows in the MountainsWithin an hour, the pristine, clinical atmosphere of The Sanctuary had transformed into a war room.

While Mateo and a team of trusted enforcers systematically locked down every communication channel coming in and out of the compound, interrogating Julian Vance in the basement holding cells, I found myself sitting in a private guest suite three doors down from Lorenzo’s master bedroom.

A medical team had checked my vitals—finding nothing unusual except an elevated heart rate and too much caffeine—and a maid had brought me a clean change of clothes: a soft cashmere sweater and wool trousers that actually fit.

A heavy leather briefcase rested on the mahogany desk beside me. When I popped the latches, neat stacks of crisp, banded hundred-dollar bills stared back at me. Fifty thousand dollars. More money than I had seen in my entire life, sitting casually in a box like spare change.

The door clicked open, and Lorenzo walked in.

He had changed into a dark tailored suit, though he still looked slightly pale around the temples. The raw, terrifying energy he exuded seemed to fill the room, pushing the oxygen out.

"The helicopter is fueled and waiting on the pad," Lorenzo said, leaning against the doorframe and crossing his arms. "It will take you and your brother to Zurich. My personal medical staff will meet you at the tarmac."

I stood up from the desk, my hands resting on the edge of the wood. "And what about you?"

"I have a corporation to take back," Lorenzo said simply. "And a few traitors to remind why they should have finished the job when they had the chance."

"You're going to war," I realized, the truth sinking in.

"I'm going home," Lorenzo corrected. He pushed off the doorframe and walked closer, stopping just a few feet away. Up close, the intensity in his crystalline grey eyes was mesmerizing, carrying a heavy, complicated weight. "You saved my life, Mia. Whether it was an accident or fate, you broke a seal that ninety-nine thousand doctors couldn't touch. That makes you a very valuable target in my world."

"A target?" My stomach dropped. "Why would anyone target me? I'm just a waitress."

"Because word travels fast in the underworld," Lorenzo said, his voice dropping into a low, serious register. "If the Moretti family or my traitorous board members find out that a waitress from Yonkers holds the key to waking the sleeping wolf, they won't see you as an innocent bystander. They'll see you as a weapon."

The room seemed to shrink. The fifty thousand dollars in the briefcase suddenly looked less like a miracle and more like blood money tying me irrevocably to his violent world.

"I can't go back to Yonkers, can I?" I whispered.

"Not safely," Lorenzo admitted without hesitation. "Not yet. But you and your brother will be protected in Zurich until I clean house. Every guard, every asset, every resource at my disposal will ensure you never have to worry about rent, medication, or breathing filters again."

"And if I say no?" I challenged, my jaw tightening as a surge of stubborn pride pushed back the fear. "If I take my brother, get on that helicopter, and tell your pilots to drop us off in Canada under fake names?"

Lorenzo looked at me for a long moment, a slow, appreciative smile touching the corners of his mouth.

"Then I would be forced to track you down across the globe," Lorenzo murmured softly, stepping just a fraction closer, "because you accidentally stole something of mine, Mia."

"What?" I breathed.

"My attention," he said.

Before I could process the words, a sharp knock echoed on the open door.

Mateo stood in the hallway, looking grim. "Boss. We have a perimeter breach. Three unmarked vehicles just breached the lower service gate. Moretti enforcers."

Lorenzo’s smile vanished instantly, replaced by the cold, ruthless mask of the mafia lord. He turned toward the door, drawing a sleek black 9mm pistol from his shoulder holster with practiced, fluid grace.

"Lock down the wing," Lorenzo ordered, his voice echoing down the corridor. "And prepare for a fight."
