Part 1: The Breaking Point
The hospital room smelled of antiseptic and fear. White walls reflected the harsh overhead lights, and the vitals monitor beeped in a steady, merciless rhythm beside the bed. The young boy—twelve years old, messy light brown hair damp with sweat—thrashed against the thin hospital gown. His arm was completely encased in a thick white plaster cast, the edges already darkening with sweat. Every movement sent sharp, white-hot pain shooting up to his shoulder.
“Get it off, please!” he screamed, voice cracking into a sob. His legs kicked wildly, smacking the mattress. “There’s something inside it! It moves! I feel it squeezing!”
His father, a middle-aged man with graying temples and a silver wedding ring that had slipped off his finger during the chaos, leaned over him frantically. He pinned the boy’s shoulders with both hands, his face twisted in pure panic. “Sweetheart, it’s only a cast,” he said, voice hoarse. “The doctors said—”
“There’s something inside it!” the boy yelled again, tears streaming. He tried to yank his arm free, but the cast didn’t budge. Only the fabric of the gown tore at the seams.
Down at the foot of the bed, the mother—blonde hair pulled into a tight ponytail, wearing a beige blazer over a silk cream blouse—clutched the bed rail. Her hands shook. Her eyes were wide with terror. “He’s hallucinating,” she whispered, but the words sounded like a prayer. “He’s always been sensitive. This has to be the morphine or the stress.”
The boy’s screams rose higher, raw and desperate. The cast clinked against the metal rail. Outside the window, vertical blinds swayed gently in the night breeze, but inside, the air felt suffocating. The vitals monitor continued its steady beeping, unchanged by the storm of emotion.

The father tightened his grip, tears mixing with the boy’s. “I’m right here. I’m not going anywhere.”
The boy’s eyes rolled back, and he screamed again—longer, louder, as if the pain inside the cast had finally spoken.
