Chapter 4 - The Ledger of the DamnedThe words hit me like physical blows. Every building I bought, every competitor I crushed, every dollar I hoarded to protect myself from ever feeling helpless again—it had all been funded by the blood money of my uncle’s trafficking ring.

For a terrifying second, the ground felt like it was disappearing beneath my feet.
I built my empire with monster’s money.
“You’re lying,” Matthew whispered from the floor, shaking his head frantically. “You’re just trying to destroy us because you lost.”
“Am I?” Julian chuckled darkly, gesturing weakly toward the hidden wall safe behind his mahogany desk. “Check the master encryption key in the wall safe. The root server isn't at the textile factory. It’s right here. Every transfer, every buyer’s name, every child’s destination for the last thirty years. Including Lucy’s final manifest.”
My gaze snapped to the wall safe.
I didn't wait for him to offer the code. I drew my Sig Sauer pistol from my holster, aimed it directly at the digital keypad, and fired three rounds into the mechanism.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
Sparks showered across the panel. The heavy steel door popped open with a heavy pneumatic hiss.
Inside sat a black military-grade encrypted hard drive.
I reached in, grabbed the drive, and tossed it down to Matthew. “Check it. Verify the routing numbers against Carter Holdings' primary ledger.”
Matthew scrambled for the drive, pulling his laptop from his briefcase and plugging it in with trembling fingers. As the decryption software bypassed Julian’s security protocols, lines of encrypted financial data scrolled across the screen.
“He’s not lying,” Matthew whispered, his face completely drained of color as he stared at the monitor. “The Swiss accounts... the shell companies... it’s all tied directly to our corporate treasury. Julian routed the capital to fund our initial real estate acquisitions fifteen years ago.”
Julian smiled, leaning his head back against the bookshelf. “You see, Adrian? You can’t arrest me without exposing yourself. If the federal task force traces these accounts, your entire business empire collapses overnight. You’ll go down right beside me as a co-conspirator.”
He thought he had checkmated us. He thought the fear of losing my money, my power, and my reputation would force me to silence my brother, sweep the evidence under the rug, and let him walk.
He didn't understand who I was.
Money wasn't my shield anymore. It never had been. It was just a weapon I had picked up because I couldn't protect a six-year-old girl named Lucy twenty-three years ago.
“You think I care about the empire?” I asked softly, walking slowly toward him until I stood directly over his battered body.
Julian’s smile faltered slightly. “Of course you do. You’re a businessman. You’re ruthless.”
“I am,” I agreed, pressing the barrel of my pistol directly against the center of his forehead. “And that’s why I’m going to do what I should have done twenty-three years ago.”
“Wait!” Julian panicked, his aristocratic composure finally shattering into abject terror. “You can’t kill me! I know where Lucy is! I know where she was sent!”
The pistol didn't waver.
“She wasn't sent to Zurich, was she?” I asked, my voice deadly calm. “Because children with rare genetic markers don't survive decades in transit. They’re sold once, and when they stop being useful, they’re disposed of. Just like you disposed of any witness who ever got too close.”
“No—wait, Adrian! I swear to God—!”
“Tony,” I called out without taking my eyes off my uncle.
The heavy doors pushed open, and my head of security stepped into the study, flanked by two federal agents in full tactical gear carrying FBI windbreakers and arrest warrants.
Agent Sarah Miller, the same federal task force director who had coordinated our regional strike teams, stepped forward, her eyes sharp and cold as she looked down at Julian Carter.
“Julian Carter,” Agent Miller announced, flashing her badge. “You are under arrest for international child trafficking, racketeering, conspiracy, and the abduction of minor children spanning three decades.”
Julian stared at the federal badge, then up at me, realization dawning in his panicked eyes. “You... you called them before you came upstairs?”
“I didn't need to call them,” I said, lowering my pistol and slipping it back into its holster. “Tony routed the encrypted data stream to the federal mainframe the second Matthew plugged that drive into his laptop. Your empire is gone, Julian. Every asset, every shell company, every corrupted judge and politician on your payroll is currently being rounded up.”

“You’re destroying our family!” Julian shrieked as the federal agents hauled him to his feet, slapping heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists. “Carter Holdings will fall! You’ll lose everything!”
“Let it burn,” I said, turning my back on him as they dragged him out of the study.
