Chapter 6 - A New Horizon

Three months later, the rain over Seattle had finally given way to the crisp, golden light of early autumn.
The Rusty Anchor Diner had a new coat of paint and a completely new management team, but Ruby Hayes no longer worked behind its grease-stained counter. Instead, she sat behind a polished mahogany desk on the top floor of Moretti Global Tower downtown, reviewing corporate compliance reports with an ease that surprised even her.
The door opened softly, and a seven-year-old boy with a bright smile peeked into the office, holding a small paper bag.
"Ruby! Dad says it's time for lunch, and we brought your favorite sandwiches from the bakery on 4th Street," Leo announced proudly, running across the rug to hand her the bag.
Ruby laughed, kneeling down to hug him. "Thanks, buddy. Tell your dad he's spoiling me."
Moments later, Dante stepped into the doorway. He wore a sharp, charcoal suit, his hair neatly combed, but his expression was relaxed, lacking the hard, paranoid edge that had defined him when they first met in the hospital waiting room.
He walked over, leaning casually against the edge of her desk, watching the way she smiled at his son.
"How are the books?" Dante asked, a faint, genuine smile playing at the corners of his mouth.
"Balanced down to the very last penny," Ruby looked up, her eyes meeting his. "And no one is skimming a single dime."
Dante reached out, taking her hand across the desk, his grip warm and steady. "Good. Because I checked the schedule, and I need a reliable partner for an upcoming inspection trip to the islands next weekend."
Ruby tilted her head, a playful spark in her eye. "Is that a business proposal, Mr. Moretti?"
May you like
"It's a life proposal," Dante corrected softly, squeezing her hand. "And unlike the last one... this check doesn't have an expiration date."
Ruby smiled, looking out the massive glass window toward the sunlit Seattle waterfront, knowing that the storm was finally, beautifully, over.
