Chapter 5 - The Council’s Reckoning

The alliance wasn't just a political maneuver; it became a war of attrition.
Over the next three weeks, the Vanguard Syndicate Council discovered that putting a woman with nothing left to lose inside the inner circle of the Moretti empire was the most catastrophic mistake they could have made. While Julian handled the corporate acquisitions and international logistics, I used my background in accounting and my intimate knowledge of human desperation to tear through the syndicate’s internal ledgers.
I found the offshore accounts Salvatore had been using to embezzle funds from the shipping docks. I found the shell companies through which aging bosses were skimming profits behind Vincent’s back. And most importantly, I found the paper trail linking two Council members to a federal investigation intended to bring down the entire Moretti dynasty from the inside.
It all culminated on a stormy Friday night in the executive boardroom of Moretti Tower.
All six syndicate bosses were seated around the glass conference table under emergency orders. Julian stood at the head of the room, flanked by four armed security guards, while I sat quietly at the side with a heavy stack of financial folios in front of me.
"You called an emergency Council meeting for a Friday night, Julian?" Salvatore demanded, his face twisted in ugly defiance. "We aren't your employees. If you have something to say, make it quick."
"I don't have anything to say," Julian replied coldly. "Emily does."
Every eye in the room turned toward me. I didn't rush. I slowly opened the leather folder, pulled out six copies of a financial audit, and slid them across the glass table toward each man.
"For the past five years, while you all pretended to be loyal soldiers of the Moretti family, Salvatore and Marcus have been systematically bleeding the organization dry," I said, my voice echoing clearly across the silent boardroom. "Over four million dollars diverted through Cayman Island shell companies, funded by cutting safety protocols on our shipping lines and skimming protection money from local businesses."
Salvatore leaped to his feet, his chair screeching loudly against the floor. "Lies! Fabricated documents! You're listening to a hysterical diner waitress who doesn't even know how this world works!"
"I know how desperate people work," I replied, standing up slowly and meeting his furious gaze without a single tremor. "And I know what happens when someone tries to betray the hand that feeds them."
I tapped a single page in the audit report. "Furthermore, Salvatore, your offshore accounts aren't hidden behind shell companies anymore. Last night, federal prosecutors received copies of your wire transfers, signed by your own corporate proxy. By Monday morning, federal marshals will be seizing your assets, your homes, and your freedom."
The color drained entirely from Salvatore’s face. He looked wildly around the table at the other bosses, but none of them met his eyes. They all recognized the irrefutable, fatal precision of the evidence on the table.
"You set me up," Salvatore whispered, his voice trembling with sudden, unadulterated terror. He reached inside his jacket, his hand flashing toward his shoulder holster with desperate speed. "I'll kill you—"
Before his fingers even touched the grip of his gun, two security guards tackled him violently to the marble floor, pinning his arms behind his back with a sharp, heavy thud. A silver-plated revolver skidded across the glass floor toward my shoes.
I looked down at the gun, then slowly raised my eyes to look at the remaining bosses sitting frozen in their chairs.
"Take him out of my sight," Julian commanded coldly.
As the guards dragged Salvatore kicking and screaming out of the boardroom, the heavy oak doors slammed shut behind him. The silence in the room was absolute, suffocating, and final.
Julian walked over to the head of the table, resting his hands on the glass, looking down at the remaining members of the Council.

"The era of internal betrayal is over," Julian said, his voice carrying the absolute, unyielding authority of a true king. "From this moment on, anyone who moves against this family doesn't answer to my father, and doesn't answer to me. You answer to Emily."
The remaining bosses slowly lowered their heads in silent submission.
