Chapter 5 - The Reckoning of the VulturesBy 9:00 a.m. the following morning, the sun broke through the clouds, bathing the city in a crisp, bright autumn light.

At the federal courthouse downtown, a swarm of news reporters and camera crews had gathered outside the stone steps. Word had leaked to the press that one of the city's most prominent socialites, Ashley Vance, had been taken into custody by federal marshals on charges of grand larceny, wire fraud, and conspiracy.
A sleek black town car pulled up to the curb near the side entrance of the courthouse.
Michael stepped out first, wearing a dark gray suit, looking sharp, immaculate, and utterly unyielding. He walked around to the passenger side, opening the door himself.
He held out his hand to Emily.
She wore a simple, elegant dark green dress Michael’s personal stylist had delivered to the hotel where they had spent the morning resting. Her hair was styled in soft waves, her face radiant despite her pale skin, carrying the quiet, undeniable grace of a woman who had walked through hell and emerged unbroken. In her arms she held Leo, wrapped in a plush cream-colored blanket, while David walked beside them holding Alexander.
The reporters swarmed forward, microphones outstretched, camera flashes popping like strobe lights in the morning air.
"Mr. Vance! Is it true your fiancée was arrested for framing your ex-wife?"
"Emily! How long have you been living in county shelters?"
"Michael! Are these your children?"
Michael didn't stop. He placed his arm securely around Emily’s waist, guiding her through the crowd with a fierce, protective presence that made the reporters instinctively step back.
"My only statement today," Michael called out, his commanding voice cutting through the noise of the press corps, "is that justice is being served. My wife, Emily Vance, is a woman of absolute integrity. And those who sought to destroy her family will spend the next several decades answering for it in a court of law."
Inside the grand courtroom, the atmosphere was suffocatingly tense.
Ashley sat at the defense table, wearing an orange orange jumpsuit, her hands handcuffed to a belt around her waist. Her hair was messy, her makeup gone, her face pale and sunken after a night in a holding cell. Her high-priced defense attorney sat beside her, shuffling frantic notes.
When the heavy wooden doors at the back of the courtroom opened and Michael walked in with Emily at his side, Ashley turned her head.
When her eyes landed on Emily—dressed like royalty, holding Michael’s son, flanked by federal agents and high-powered legal counsel—Ashley let out a sharp, choked gasp.
"Your Honor," the Assistant United States Attorney announced, standing up at the prosecutor's podium. "The government presents physical evidence, encrypted financial ledgers, and sworn affidavits from co-conspirators Julian Vance and Officer Miller, demonstrating a systematic, multi-year conspiracy led by the defendant, Ashley Vance."
Ashley’s attorney stood up weakly. "Your Honor, my client requests bail—"
"Bail is denied," the judge snapped, leaning over her bench with a stern, icy expression. "Given the vast financial assets involved, the destruction of medical records, and the clear flight risk demonstrated by the defendant’s offshore account activity, Defendant Vance will remain in federal custody pending trial."
Ashley’s head dropped onto the defense table, her body shaking with silent, pathetic sobs as the court marshals stepped forward to lead her away.
As she was escorted past the prosecution table, Ashley lifted her eyes one last time, looking desperately at Michael.
"Michael... please..." she whimpered, her voice cracking. "Tell them to stop... please..."
Michael did not answer. He didn't even look at her. His eyes were fixed entirely on Emily, who was adjusting the blanket over Leo’s chest, completely unbothered by the woman who had tried to erase her existence.
As they walked out of the courtroom into the bright sunlight of the corridor, David stepped up beside Michael, handing him a sealed manila envelope.
"What's this?" Michael asked.
"The deed to the lake house on Mount Ridge," David smiled, a rare, genuine expression appearing on the private investigator's face. "The transfer went through twenty minutes ago. Fully furnished, private security team on perimeter, thirty acres of fenced woods, and a nursery big enough for four cribs."
Michael turned to Emily, taking her hand in his. "What do you think, Emily? Ready to go home?"
May you like
Emily looked down at her sons, then up at Michael, a soft, beautiful smile spreading across her face—the first true smile he had seen on her lips in over a year.
"Yes, Michael," she whispered, her voice full and strong. "Take us home."
