Chapter 5 - A City on Fire

The conflict that followed became known in the underground history of the city as the "Clean Sweep."

For forty-eight hours, Christian Moretti unleashed the full, unfettered might of his family's syndicate. He didn't use chaotic street violence; he used financial starvation, legal pressure, and targeted strikes on Marcone infrastructure. By Friday morning, three of Dominic Marcone's primary distribution warehouses were raided by federal agents using anonymous tips provided by Moretti accountants. By Friday afternoon, the Marcones' private bank accounts in the Cayman Islands were completely drained through digital intercepts.

Alina stayed in the penthouse, protected by a dozen armed men. She didn't see the violence, but she felt its tremors through the news reports and the tense, midnight phone calls Christian made from the study.

On Saturday night, the storm reached its zenith.

Christian arrived at the penthouse at 3:00 AM. His suit was wrinkled, his tie was gone, and there was a small cut across his cheekbone, but his eyes were peaceful. The frantic, predatory energy that had possessed him since the gallery shooting had burned itself out.

He walked into the kitchen, where Alina was waiting with a fresh pot of black coffee. He looked at the mug, then at her, a faint, tired smile touching his lips.

"It’s over," he said softly, sitting on a barstool.

Alina poured the coffee and set it before him. "Dominic Marcone?"

"He boarded a flight to Sicily two hours ago," Christian said, taking a slow sip. "He surrendered his territories, his contracts, and his business names to our council in exchange for his life. The Marcone syndicate no longer exists in this city. They will never threaten you again, Alina. Never."

Alina stepped into the space between his knees, her hands rising to gently touch the cut on his cheek. "And what about you, Christian? Did you have to become a monster to save me?"

Christian caught her wrists, his eyes dark and vulnerable. "I am a monster to the people who try to bring chaos into my city, Alina. But to you... I want to be just the man from the corner booth. The man who wants to spend the rest of his life making sure your coffee never gets spilled again."

He pulled her down onto his lap, burying his face in the crook of her neck. For the first time since she had met him, Alina felt the absolute weight of his world lift from his shoulders, leaving behind only the simple, honest heartbeat of a man who loved her completely.
