Chapter 1 - The Weight of Silence

The cold mountain air bit into my bare legs as I stared up at the man standing beneath the stone archway. Up close, his presence was overwhelming. This was Dante Moretti—a name whispered in upstate New York boardrooms, courtyards, and union halls with a mixture of terror and absolute reverence. He owned the Hollow Pine Resort, along with half the shipping and construction contracts between Albany and the Canadian border.
He didn't look at my face immediately. His dark eyes remained fixed on the yellowing bruises wrapping around my right wrist.
"Who gave you those?" Dante asked. His voice was dangerously quiet, cutting through the rush of the mountain wind.
"It’s... it was an accident," I stammered, pulling the charcoal-gray wool robe tighter around my shoulders. "I slipped on the service stairs at the diner where I work. It's nothing."
"People don't slip and leave four distinct thumbprints and a compression fracture on their own radius," Dante said, stepping closer. He didn't raise his voice, but the guard near the path instinctively shifted his hand closer to his holster. "In my experience, bruises like that come from someone who thinks they own you."
I swallowed hard, refusing to cry. My name is Clara. For two years, I had been trapped under the thumb of Ray Miller, a local union enforcer who controlled my cousin’s debt and treated my life as collateral. Ray believed he owned me. And tonight, when I told him I was taking a weekend off at the resort using Trish's raffle ticket, he had made it clear what would happen if I dared to leave town.
Dante turned to his security chief, a towering man named Marco. "Find out who checked into room 214 under a falsified corporate badge twenty minutes ago. Bring him to the main lodge."

"Wait—no!" I panicked, scrambling out of the stone pool with the heavy wool robe dragging on the wet flags. "If Ray sees you, he'll—you don't know what he's capable of!"
"Little girl," Dante said softly, stopping me with a single, heavy look from his dark eyes. "On this mountain, nobody does anything unless I allow it. And right now, someone hurt a guest who was sleeping under my roof."
