Chapter 4 - The Truth Unmasked

The emergency room at St. Jude’s Regional Hospital was converted into a fortress within thirty minutes of Andrew Miller’s arrival by medical helicopter.
Armed county sheriff deputies stood guard at every entrance, while trauma surgeons worked frantically in Operating Room 3 to stabilize Andrew’s crushed leg, repair internal bleeding from a ruptured spleen, and treat severe stage-three hypothermia.
In the waiting room down the hall, Detective Marcus Vance stood over the handcuffed gunman whom Natalie had shot on the mountain.
The man’s name was Viktor Vance (no relation to Detective Vance)—a disgraced former private military contractor who had been on the payroll of Vance & Sterling Development for three years as an "unregistered security consultant."
"Your rifle match came back, Viktor," Detective Vance said coldly, throwing a stack of forensic papers onto the small coffee table. "The wire saw found in your tool kit matches the cuts on Andrew Miller's brake line perfectly. And the paint transfer on his bumper came directly from the silver Porsche registered to Richard Sterling."
Viktor sat silently, his shoulder bandaged, staring at the floor.
"You're facing attempted murder of a civilian, attempted murder of a police officer, corporate sabotage, and conspiracy," Detective Vance continued, leaning in close. "You do forty years to life in maximum security... unless you tell me right now who signed the checks."
Viktor swallowed hard, his hands trembling within the steel cuffs. He looked up at the detective with bloodshot eyes.
"It was Sterling," Viktor rasped. "Sterling offered me fifty thousand dollars to make Andrew's truck disappear off Route 9. He said if Andrew died in an accident, the land trust would go to him, and no one would ever ask questions about a grieving, overwhelmed father losing control in a storm."
"And when Andrew survived?"
"Sterling saw the news reports that Andrew's body wasn't in the truck," Viktor confessed, his voice shaking. "He panicked. He knew if Andrew crawled out of those woods and talked to the cops, it was over. He paid me another twenty grand to go into Blackwood Ridge and finish him off before the K-9 units found him."
Detective Vance turned to Natalie, who was sitting nearby, her hands still stained with mountain mud. "We have him. Get the warrant team."
Ten minutes later, four marked police cruisers pulled up to the glittering headquarters of Vance & Sterling Development.
Richard Sterling was sitting in his corner office, frantically typing on his laptop, transferring funds into an offshore bank account in the Cayman Islands, when the double doors were kicked open.
"Richard Sterling!" Detective Vance announced, drawing his sidearm. "You are under arrest for attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, corporate fraud, and evidence tampering!"
Sterling leaped up from his chair, his face turning bright red. "This is outrage! Do you know who I am? I have lawyers on retainer—"
Natalie stepped forward, slamming Sterling against the glass window, pulling his arms behind his back and snapping the steel cuffs onto his wrists with a satisfying CLICK.
"Your hitman sang like a canary, Sterling," Natalie hissed in his ear. "And Andrew Miller is alive. He’s going to live, and he’s going to watch you rot in a federal penitentiary for the rest of your life."
As Sterling was marched out through the opulent marble lobby in handcuffs, news crews were already waiting outside. The cameras flashed endlessly, capturing the fallen executive being shoved into the back of a police cruiser.
By three o'clock that afternoon, the truth erupted across the internet like a tidal wave.
The viral headlines that had mocked and vilified Andrew Miller were deleted, replaced by breaking news updates that shocked the entire city:

Outside Andrew and Ashley’s rental house on Oak Street, a massive crowd began to gather.
Brenda Higgins—the neighbor who had spoken so harshly to the reporters four nights ago—stood near the chain-link fence, clutching a bouquet of flowers, weeping openly in shame. Neighbors who had whispered rumors now brought hot meals, boxes of toys, tools to fix the leaning mailbox, and cards filled with tearful apologies.
Community members organized a GoFundMe page titled “Justice for Andrew & Ashley.” Within six hours, donations poured in from across the country—over five hundred thousand dollars raised to pay off Ashley’s medical bills, repair their home, and secure their future forever.
Inside Room 214 of St. Jude’s Hospital, the heavy, suffocating darkness that had hung over the little family for four long days finally began to lift.
Ashley sat up in her hospital bed, eating a bowl of warm chicken soup. Her fever was completely gone, her cheeks had regained their rosy glow, and her small hands were holding her stuffed puppy, Buddy.
The door opened softly, and Natalie stepped inside, carrying a large box of brand-new art supplies and colored pencils.
"Officer Natalie!" Ashley beamed, her dark eyes lighting up with happiness.
"Hey, sweetie," Natalie smiled, walking over and placing the gifts on the bed. "How’s the tummy feeling?"
"It doesn't hurt at all!" Ashley said proudly. "The doctor said the medicine worked!"
Natalie pulled a chair up to the bedside, taking Ashley’s hand gently. "I have the best news in the whole wide world, Ashley. Your daddy is out of surgery. He’s resting right down the hall in Room 208."
Ashley dropped her spoon, her eyes going wide as saucers. "Daddy? Can I see him? Please, can I see him?"
"He's still asleep from his medicine," Natalie said softly, stroking her hair. "But the doctors said as soon as he wakes up tomorrow morning, you can be the very first person he sees."

Ashley wiped a happy tear from her eye, clutching Buddy close to her heart. "I knew he was coming back. I knew he wouldn't leave me."
"He never left you, Ashley," Natalie whispered, her own eyes brimming with tears. "He fought through a whole mountain just to get back to you."
