Part IV: The Alliance of Power

The meeting in the small Astoria kitchen lasted until noon. Chloe sat in amazement as Gabrielle Thompson systematically went through her mother’s medical records, the old diary entries, and the employment records from the St. Regis catering company.

"They’re going to try to paint you as an opportunist, Chloe," Gabrielle explained, her fountain pen moving across a yellow legal pad with clinical precision. "Victoria’s legal team is already drafting a defamation suit to gag you. They want a judge to issue an injunction so you can’t speak to the press or release any further documentation. It’s the standard billionaire playbook: suffocate the victim with legal fees until they disappear."

"I don't have money for a lawyer," Chloe whispered, looking down at her rough, calloused hands. "The three hundred dollars I gave that cook was the last of my savings. I don't even know how I'm going to pay the rent for next month."

Cameron Rivers leaned against the tiny kitchen counter, his eyes fixed on the city skyline visible through the small, grime-streaked window. "You don't need money, Chloe. Rivers Industries is taking over your legal representation. Every bill, every court cost, every investigator Gabrielle needs—it’s already taken care of."

Chloe blinked back tears. "Why are you doing this? You don't even know me."

"Because twenty years ago, my mother was working double shifts in a diner on the West Side while people like the Bennetts looked right through her," Cameron said, his voice deep and resonant with a cold, protective fire. "I built an eight-billion-dollar empire so that no one could ever treat my family that way again. When I see a girl who survived what you survived, holding onto nothing but her mother’s honor... I don't see a stranger. I see my own blood."

The phone on the laminate table buzzed. It was an unknown number.

Chloe looked at Gabrielle, who nodded. "Answer it. Put it on speaker."

Chloe tapped the screen. "Hello?"

"Chloe... it’s Arthur." The voice on the other end was rough, heavy with emotion and exhaustion. "The DNA results came back from the lab. It’s... it’s a ninety-nine point nine percent match. You are my daughter."

Chloe’s breath hitched in her throat. Hearing the words out loud didn't feel like a victory; it felt like a heavy, ancient stone settling deep into her chest. "What does that change, Mr. Bennett? Does that bring my mother back? Does that erase the last twenty years of her scrubbing floors while you lived in a palace?"

"No," Arthur said, his voice breaking. "It doesn't. And I will spend the rest of my life begging for your forgiveness for the things I didn't know. But right now, I need you to listen to me. Thomas Vance and Victoria have launched a full corporate coup against me. They’ve leaked falsified stories to the media claiming your mother was a blackmailer who targeted my father before his death. They are trying to destroy Elena’s memory to save their own stock price."

Gabrielle snatched the phone from the table. "Mr. Bennett, my name is Gabrielle Thompson. I am Chloe’s legal counsel. If your wife’s family thinks they can defame a deceased woman who cannot defend herself, tell them they just opened themselves up to a multi-million dollar wrongful infamy suit. And tell Thomas Vance that his exclusive holdings in the Horizon Group merger are about to face a massive regulatory challenge from Rivers Industries."

A long pause came over the line. Then, Arthur let out a sound that was half-laugh, half-sob. "Thank you, Ms. Thompson. Tell my daughter... tell Chloe that I am coming for her. Not to take her away, but to stand beside her."
