Chapter 2 - The IntrusionThe entire courtroom froze.

Judge Vance held his gavel inches above the sound block, his eyes widening in annoyance and shock. Officers standing by the perimeter reached instinctively for their holsters.

Framed in the doorway stood a tiny, breathless figure.

It was Idan Hamilton.

The seven-year-old boy was panting heavily, his dark hair messy and plastered to his forehead with sweat. His small blue school blazer was unbuttoned, his tie pulled askew, and his knee-high socks were bunched around his ankles. He was clutching a heavy, scuffed leather satchel against his chest as if it contained his very life.

Behind him, panting and red-faced, came Miss Gable, his stern, elderly nanny.

"Master Idan! Stop right now!" Miss Gable gasped, grabbing at his sleeve as she burst into the room. "Your grandmother explicitly forbade—"

"Get off me!" Idan screamed, pulling away with a burst of frantic energy.

He didn't look at the judge. He didn't look at the armed bailiffs or the sea of staring reporters. His wide, tear-filled eyes locked directly onto Clara, sitting at the defense table.

"CLARA!" the boy sobbed, his voice echoing off the high plaster ceiling. "CLARA!"

Clara stood up instinctively, her chair scraping loudly against the floor. "Idan?!"

"Order in the court!" Judge Vance roared, slamming his gavel down three times in rapid succession. "Bailiffs, secure the room! Who is responsible for this child?!"

"Your Honor, that is my grandson!" Margaret stood up in the gallery, her face flushing a deep, furious crimson. "Nanny Gable, take him out of here immediately! He has no business being in a court of law!"

Two uniformed bailiffs moved toward the center aisle to intercept the child.

"Don't touch him!" Adam shouted, vaulting out of the witness box and rushing toward the aisle. "Idan! What are you doing here?! You're supposed to be at private school!"

Idan didn't stop. He ducked under the arm of the first bailiff, sprinted down the carpeted aisle, and flung himself over the low wooden bar dividing the spectator gallery from the well of the court.

He didn't run to his father. He didn't run to his grandmother.

He threw his arms around Clara’s waist, burying his face into her grey blouse, sobbing so violently his entire little body shook.

"Clara! Clara, I'm sorry! I'm so sorry!" he cried, his fingers clutching at her clothes with desperate strength. "I tried to tell them! I tried, but Grandmother locked my bedroom door! She took my tablet! She said you were gone forever!"

Clara dropped to her knees right there on the hard floor. She wrapped her arms around the little boy, holding him close, burying her face in his hair as tears spilled freely down her cheeks. The smells of baby powder, sunshine, and warm rain that always belonged to Idan filled her senses, washing away the cold stench of the courtroom.

"Oh, my sweet boy," Clara wept, kissing the side of his head. "My sweet, sweet boy... You shouldn't be here. It's okay. Clara is okay."

"It's not okay!" Idan yelled, pulling back and looking into her eyes with a fierce, terrifying intensity that belonged to someone much older. "They're lying about you! She's lying!"

"Idan, that is enough!" Margaret walked down the aisle, her heels clicking like gunshots against the floorboards. She reached down, grabbing Idan by the wrist to pull him away from Clara. "You are a Hamilton! You do not kneel on the floor with a thief! Come with me right now!"

"LET GO OF ME!" Idan shrieked, twisting his arm out of her grip. He turned on his grandmother with pure rage, his tear-streaked face contorted. "YOU'RE THE THIEF! YOU'RE THE BAD PERSON!"

The courtroom went completely, utterly silent.

Even the court reporter stopped her machine, her fingers hovering over the keys.

Adam stepped between his mother and his son, dropping to one knee beside Idan. His face was pale, his eyes wide with shock. "Idan... look at me. What are you saying? What are you talking about?"

"She's lying, Daddy!" Idan pointed a shaking finger at Margaret, who stood frozen, her face suddenly devoid of all color. "She took the blue stone! I saw her!"

"Your Honor!" Sterling interjected frantically, rushing forward. "This is an outraged, traumatized child who is being manipulated by the defense! I move for an immediate recess and the removal of the minor from these proceedings!"

"Shut up!" Adam snapped at his own lawyer, his voice dropping into a low, lethal register that made Sterling step back instantly. Adam turned his full attention back to his son. "Idan... look at Daddy. What did you see?"

"It was the afternoon before Clara was sent away," Idan sobbed, wiping his nose with the back of his sleeve. "I was playing hide-and-seek by myself in the hallway outside the study. I was hiding behind the big velvet curtain near the door."

"Idan, darling," Margaret put in, her voice suddenly high, sweet, and trembling with forced maternal affection. "You were dreaming, sweet boy. You remember you had that bad fever last month? You're confused—"

"I was NOT dreaming!" Idan screamed at her. He unzipped his scuffed leather satchel with shaking fingers and dumped its contents directly onto the defense table.

A heavy, leather-bound brass journal fell out, along with a sleek black electronic recording device—a digital voice recorder that Adam recognized immediately as the one he used for taking corporate memos in his home office.

"I saw Grandmother go into the study," Idan said, his voice dropping into a clear, steady rhythm as he held onto Clara’s hand with all his might. "She didn't know I was behind the curtain. She walked to the wall painting. She put in the numbers. I saw her do it! She pushed 1-0-2-4-8-8."

Adam’s breath hitched. That was the safe combination—a sequence he had never told his son.

"She took the velvet box out," Idan continued, tears running down his cheeks. "She took the blue stone out of the box and put it in her coat pocket. Then she took a small black tool from her bag and did something to the inside of the box. She put the box back in the safe, closed the door, but she didn't lock it all the way. She left it open just a tiny bit!"

"That's a lie!" Margaret gasped, clutching her throat. "The boy is delirious! He's being fed stories by this woman!"

"And then," Idan shouted over his grandmother's voice, pointing at the black digital recorder on the table, "she went into the hallway and talked to Uncle Richard on her phone! I had Daddy's recorder in my pocket because I was playing spy! I recorded her!"

Julian’s eyes went wide. He grabbed the recorder off the table, his hands shaking violently. "Your Honor! The defense requests permission to play the audio file contained on this device immediately!"

"This is unauthenticated evidence!" Sterling yelled, his voice cracking with desperation. "It is inadmissible!"

"Silence!" Judge Vance roared, slamming his gavel down with enough force to splinter the block. He leaned over his bench, his steel-grey eyes locked onto Margaret Hamilton, who was visibly shaking, her hands clutching her pearls so tightly the silk thread stretched thin.

"Clerk," Judge Vance ordered, his voice echoing like thunder. "Connect that recorder to the court audio system."
