Chapter 3 - The Traitor's Net

The peace of the North Woods was shattered on the fifth night.

It began with a subtle signal—a single high-pitched tone from Dominic’s secure communications array in the basement.

Cash was sitting in the living room, working through physical therapy exercises with a wooden cane, when Dominic rushed up the stairs, his face pale beneath the dim lighting.

“Boss,” Dominic hissed, pulling a tactical sidearm from his shoulder holster. “We’ve been burned. Reed’s tech crew traced an IP ping from a medical supplier Dominic used to buy your specialized antibiotics.”

Bryer came out of the kitchen, her eyes wide with instant terror. “What does that mean?”

“It means,” Cash said, his voice instantly transforming into the cold, calculated tone of a supreme commander, “that we have company.”

Outside, headlights swept through the pine trees. Three black armored trucks cut through the snow, their engines roaring like hunting beasts.

“Dominic, get Bryer and Perry into the reinforced storm cellar beneath the kitchen,” Cash ordered, grabbing a heavy shotgun from the wall rack despite his healing wounds.

“No!” Bryer cried out, grabbing Cash’s arm. “You can’t fight them! Your stitches will burst!”

“Bryer, listen to me,” Cash said, placing his hands on her face, forcing her to look into his dark, steady eyes. “I am not letting Reed take another step toward you or Perry. Get into the cellar. Lock the iron bolt from the inside. Do not open it for anyone except me or Dominic.”

“Cash, please—”

“Go!” Cash commanded softly, pressing a quick, fierce kiss to her forehead before pushing her toward Dominic.

Bryer grabbed Perry, who was clutching his backpack, and descended into the dark, stone-walled cellar beneath the kitchen floorboards. Dominic slammed the heavy steel trapdoor shut, throwing the iron bolt into place.

Above them, hell broke loose.

The sound of automatic gunfire echoed through the lodge’s thick floorboards. Heavy boots thundered across the wood. Explosions of shattered glass and splintered wood rattled the dust from the cellar ceiling.

Inside the dark cellar, Perry held his flashlight, his hands trembling violently. Bryer pulled him tight against her chest, her eyes locked on the ceiling, every gunshot striking her heart like a physical blow.

Please, God, she prayed silently, tears streaming down her face. Don't let him die. Not after he found us.

Minutes felt like centuries. The gunfire above slowly shifted from rapid exchanges to sporadic, heavy shotgun blasts—the distinct, booming roar of Cash’s weapon.

Then, a heavy thud landed directly above the trapdoor.

Silence fell over the lodge.

Bryer held her breath, her heart hammering against her ribs so hard she felt sick.

A metal scraping sound echoed from the trapdoor. The iron bolt slowly slid back.

The door swung open.

Framed in the opening stood Cash. His face was smeared with soot and blood, his shirt torn at the shoulder, a smoking shotgun held in one hand. Behind him, Dominic was securing two captured mercenaries with heavy zip-ties.

Cash looked down into the cellar. Seeing Bryer and Perry safe, the terrifying, lethal mask on his face instantly melted away. He dropped the shotgun, sliding down to his knees beside the opening, extending a shaking hand toward her.

“It’s clear,” Cash rasped, his breath coming in heavy gasps. “It’s over, sweetheart. Come up.”

Bryer scrambled out of the cellar and threw her arms around Cash’s neck, weeping openly against his shoulder. Cash wrapped his strong arms around her, holding her so tightly she could feel the thunderous, triumphant beat of his heart.

“You’re hurt,” she sobbed, noticing fresh blood seeping through his shirt bandages.

“I’m alive,” Cash whispered into her hair, kissing her neck, her cheek, and finally her lips in a deep, desperate kiss that tasted of iron and victory. “We’re all alive.”

Dominic walked over, wiping blood from his cheek. “Boss, we captured Reed’s chief lieutenant. He admitted Reed is hosting the final ratification dinner tonight at the downtown Grand Hotel. Every syndicate boss in the Midwest is there. Reed is about to be officially crowned as the new head of the Moretti family.”

Cash slowly stood up, pulling Bryer up beside him. His dark eyes flickered with a cold, terrifying fire.

“Then let’s not keep my funeral guests waiting,” Cash said softly. “It’s time to crash a party.”
