Chapter 5 - The Master of the HouseBefore Caridad could retreat up the iron stairs, the heavy steel door beside her hissed open with a pneumatic sigh of pressurized air.

A figure stepped out from the brightly lit chamber beyond.
He was a man in his late sixties, impeccably dressed in a tailored charcoal suit that looked entirely out of place in the damp underground bunker. His silver hair was neatly combed, his posture ramrod straight, and his pale blue eyes carried the chilling, untouchable authority of a man who owned the world and everything in it.
Julian Carter.
He did not look like a monster from a nightmare; he looked like a benevolent grandfather, a wealthy philanthropist stepping out of his study. But as he looked at Caridad, his lips curved into a thin, unconcerned smile.
"Mother Caridad," he said, his voice smooth, cultured, and unnervingly calm. "I must apologize for the lack of formal hospitality. We usually don't receive uninvited guests down here."
Caridad gripped the handle of her crowbar tighter, her knuckles white. "You. You built this. You built a subterranean tunnel directly beneath a house of God."
"A house of God that my family funded, Mother," Julian corrected gently, stepping into the corridor and closing the heavy door behind him. "Let us not forget who kept this roof over your heads during the dry years of the nineties. A mutual investment, shall we say?"
"It’s an abomination," Caridad hissed, stepping forward. "You’ve been using a hidden access shaft to infiltrate the convent. You’ve been violating Sister Esperanza—"
Julian burst out laughing—a short, dry sound that lacked any warmth. "Violating her? My dear Caridad, you have a remarkably archaic view of human interaction. No one is violating anyone."
"She is a nun! She took vows of chastity!"
"And she is also a genetic masterpiece," Julian interrupted, his tone shifting from casual amusement to cold, clinical detachment. He walked over to a stainless-steel control console embedded in the wall and tapped a sequence of keys. A bank of high-definition monitors flickered to life behind him, displaying live camera feeds from various rooms across the convent, including Esperanza’s cell.
"For generations, my family has engaged in a very specific, highly controlled breeding program," Julian continued, pacing slowly as he spoke. "We seek rare genetic markers—neural plasticity, immune system anomalies, and exceptional longevity. Twenty-five years ago, we identified a young girl in the state orphanage system who possessed the exact chromosomal profile we needed: Esperanza."
Caridad’s blood ran cold. "You placed her here."
"I funded her education, steered her toward the holy orders, and ensured she took her vows," Julian said with chilling candor. "A cloistered convent is the ultimate controlled environment, Mother. No outside pathogens, no social distractions, absolute peace, and complete dietary control. It is a laboratory disguised as a sanctuary."
"How... how do you access her room without breaking the locks?" Caridad demanded, her voice shaking with rage.
Julian walked over to the end of the corridor and tapped a seamless section of the concrete wall. A section of the stonework swung inward on invisible hydraulic hinges, revealing a narrow vertical shaft fitted with a silent, motorized freight lift.
"A pneumatic hoist installed during the 2001 renovation," Julian explained proudly. "It opens directly through the floorboards beneath the altar platform in the private chapel and behind the wainscoting in the residential wing. Completely soundless. Completely undetectable."
"And Esperanza?" Caridad whispered, horror gripping her throat. "Does she know? Does she know she is nothing more than an experiment to you?"
Julian paused. A strange, complex expression crossed his face—something bordering on genuine affection mixed with ruthless ambition.
"Esperanza believes she is touched by the divine," Julian said softly. "When she wakes in the night, she believes she is being visited by an angel. The neuro-hypnotic gas we release into her cell through the ventilation vents ensures she remembers nothing of the physical reality—only a dream of light and grace. Why shatter a person’s absolute happiness with crude, earthly realities? She loves her children. She believes she is fulfilling a holy calling. Everyone is satisfied."
"You drugged her," Caridad said, her voice dropping to a deadly whisper. "You drugged a woman of God and used her body like livestock."
Julian sighed, adjusting his cuffs. "You are an intelligent woman, Caridad, but you are blinded by dogma. Empires are not built on prayers; they are built on bloodlines. And my bloodline is about to enter its next evolution."
He pressed a hidden button on his sleeve cuff.

Before Caridad could swing the crowbar, two heavy-set men in tactical security uniforms stepped out of the shadows behind her, grabbing her arms and wrenching the iron tool from her grip.
"Lock her in the auxiliary holding room," Julian commanded, turning his back as he walked back toward his private laboratory. "We accelerate the extraction protocol. The federal task force is already sniffing around the Carter Holdings subsidiaries in Chicago. Once the final child is delivered, we dismantle this bunker and disappear."
