Chapter 4 - The Siege of Crane Villa

The storm that hit Chicago that night was the worst the city had seen in a decade. Gale-force winds whipped torrential rain across Oak Park, knocking out power lines and plunging the estate into pitch-black darkness.

Inside the Crane Villa, the backup generators hummed quietly in the basement, casting long, amber shadows down the corridors.

Nadia sat in the grand library, reading a book by the light of a brass desk lamp. Across the room, her father, Mateo, was sound asleep in a leather armchair, a warm blanket tucked around his lap. He was safe, his color returning thanks to the private medical team Alister had provided.

Suddenly, the lights flickered and died. The low hum of the emergency generator cut out with a sharp, sickening whine.

CLICK.

The emergency red backup lights flickered on, bathing the library in a blood-red glow.

Nadia stood up instantly, her heart hammering against her ribs. "Dad... wake up."

Before Mateo could stir, the heavy glass window at the end of the east hallway shattered with a deafening roar!

BOOM!

Gunfire erupted outside! Automatic weapons tore through the rain—TAK-TAK-TAK-TAK-TAK!—interspersed with the muffled thuds of suppressed pistols!

Tristan Hale had not waited for midnight. Financed by rogue elements of the cartel, he had launched a desperate, suicidal final assault on the villa to kill Alister before the Commission could execute him.

Jonah burst into the library, a tactical submachine gun strapped across his chest, blood dripping from a cut on his forehead.

"Miss Serrano! Get your father into the safe room behind the wine cellar! NOW!" Jonah yelled over the sound of breaking glass. "They cut the main power grid and breached the perimeter fence!"

"Where is Alister?" Nadia screamed over the noise.

"He's in the west wing holding off their assault team!" Jonah shouted, shoving Mateo toward a hidden door behind a bookcase. "GO!"

Nadia helped her father into the secret passage, but as Jonah turned to secure the door, a hail of bullets hit the wooden doorframe! Jonah groaned, falling backward into the corridor, shot twice in the shoulder!

"Jonah!" Nadia cried out.

Two masked mercenaries in night-vision goggles stepped into the hallway, their rifles raised!

Nadia didn't hesitate. She grabbed a heavy bronze statue of an eagle from the side table and hurled it with all her strength into the lead mercenary’s face!

The heavy statue struck the man's goggles, shattering them and sending him crashing backward onto his comrade!

Nadia grabbed Jonah by his tactical vest, pulling his heavy frame into the secret passage and hitting the emergency lock button! The heavy stone door slammed shut, sealing her father and the wounded Jonah inside the armored room.

"Nadia... no..." Jonah coughed, clutching his bleeding chest. "You have to stay here..."

"I'm going to find Alister," Nadia said, her amber eyes burning with fierce determination.

"Take the service passages..." Jonah gasped, handing her a small radio and his sidearm. "They don't know the house layout... use the staff stairwells..."

Nadia grabbed the weapon—her hands steady despite the adrenaline surging through her veins. She knew every inch of this house. She had spent weeks sweeping its floors, cleaning its hidden corners, and learning its secret service routes.

She slipped into the narrow servant passage behind the walls, moving like a ghost through the dark.

In the grand marble foyer of the west wing, Alister was fighting a brutal, desperate battle.

Armed with a heavy combat shotgun, he was pinned behind a thick marble column. Three dead mercenaries lay on the floor around him, but four more were advancing under the cover of flashbang grenades.

Tristan Hale stood near the grand staircase, wearing a tactical vest, his face contorted in insane rage.

"Give it up, Alister!" Tristan screamed over the ringing in the hall. "You took everything from me! My position, my reputation, my life! I’m taking this house over your dead body!"

"You took yourself down, Tristan!" Alister shouted back, firing two rounds that kept the mercenaries behind the stone statues.

Alister checked his magazine—empty. He pulled his secondary pistol, but a grenade landed five feet from his position!

BANG!

The blinding light and concussive blast threw Alister sideways across the floor, his pistol knocked from his hand, sliding away into the open hallway!

Alister groaned, struggling to shake the violent ringing from his ears as he tried to stand. His vision swam with spots.

Tristan stepped out from behind the staircase, a cold, triumphant smile spreading across his face. He walked up to Alister, leveling his rifle directly at Alister’s head.

"End of the line, Architect," Tristan sneered, his finger tightening on the trigger. "The empire is mine."

POP! POP!

Two sharp gunshots echoed from the top of the servant stairwell!

Tristan gasped as two bullets slammed into his side, tearing through his tactical vest! He stumbled back, dropping his rifle as blood gushed from his ribs!

At the balcony above stood Nadia.

Her hands were shaking, the silver pistol smoking in her grip, but her eyes were fixed on the man who had dared to threaten Alister's life.

"Get away from him!" she yelled.

Alister reacted instantly. The split-second distraction was all he needed. He lunged from the floor like a wounded lion, sweeping Tristan’s legs out from under him!

Tristan crashed violently onto the marble floor! Alister mounted him, grabbing Tristan by the vest and driving a devastating right hook straight into his jaw—CRACK!

Tristan’s head snapped back, knocked instantly unconscious, his face a bloody ruin.

The remaining mercenaries, seeing their leader down and hearing the distant sirens of approaching police forces, abandoned their weapons and fled into the storm-drenched night.

The foyer fell into absolute silence, broken only by the sound of the rain pounding against the high windows.

Alister lay on his back on the marble floor, breathing heavily, his chest heaving as he stared up at the high ceiling.

Footsteps hurried down the stairs.

Nadia dropped the gun and fell to her knees beside him, her face frantic with worry as she searched his body for injuries.

"Alister! Are you hurt? Talk to me!" she cried, her tears finally overflowing.

Alister looked up into her face. Despite the blood on his forehead, the ringing in his ears, and the smoke filling his home, he felt something he had never felt in his entire thirty-five years of existence.

He was alive. Truly, vibrant, gloriously alive.

Slowly, Alister reached up. His broad, warm hand gently cupped her cheek, wiping away a teardrop with his thumb.

And then, in the dim, red emergency light of his destroyed fortress, Alister Crane did something no man in Chicago had ever seen him do.

He smiled.

It was a genuine, beautiful, breathtaking smile that transformed his stern, scarred face into something dazzlingly human.

"I'm fine, Nadia," Alister whispered, his gray eyes shining with fierce, undivided love. "I'm fine... because you came back for me."

Nadia sobbed out a laugh, dropping her forehead against his chest as his arms wrapped tightly around her, holding her against his heart while the storm raged outside.
