Chapter 5 - The Night of Reckoning

The Grand Meridian Hotel was a cathedral of marble, crystal, and manufactured elegance.
Classical music drifted down from the vaulted ceilings, mingling with the soft murmur of wealthy socialites, corrupt politicians, and high-ranking syndicate capos sipping champagne.
Maya stood before the grand mirror in the bridal suite upstairs, adjusting the straps of a backless midnight-blue silk gown that hugged her frame with lethal grace. Her hair had been styled into an intricate cascading wave, and a diamond-encrusted tennis bracelet sparkled around her wrist—a temporary loan from Donatella’s private vault.
She looked less like a diner waitress and more like an angel of vengeance.
A knock sounded at the door. Victor entered, wearing a tuxedo that concealed a compact submachine gun under the left arm.
“The Signora is waiting in the private elevator,” Victor reported. “Are you ready?”
Maya took one final, steadying breath, looking at her reflection. The fear that had paralyzed her in the diner alley was gone, replaced by a cold, sharp clarity.
“Let’s go,” she said.
They descended into the main ballroom. The arrival of Donatella Moretti—accompanied by her fierce bodyguard detail and a stunning, unfamiliar young woman—sent a ripple through the crowd. Conversations died instantly. Heads turned. Even Marcus Vane, standing near the champagne fountain with a glass in his hand, froze mid-sentence.
Vane was a tall, silver-haired man in his late fifties, sporting an expensive tailored tuxedo and a predatory smile that didn't reach his eyes.
As Donatella and Maya approached him, Vane’s smile faltered slightly as he recognized the face standing beside the matriarch.
“Donatella,” Vane purred, raising his glass in mock salute. “I didn't realize you were bringing guests to my charity event. And... well, well. If it isn't Ms. Vance. I thought you were still hiding in some damp basement downtown.”
Maya didn't flinch. She met his gaze with absolute, unyielding ice.
“Hello, Marcus,” Maya said, her voice carrying clearly across the silent room. “You’re looking well for a man whose offshore accounts are about to be frozen by federal investigators.”
Vane’s face twitched. A dangerous shadow crossed his eyes. “You little bitch. You’re entirely out of your depth here.”
“Are we?” Donatella stepped forward, leaning heavily on her cane. She raised her glass. “Marcus, my dear, you made a grave miscalculation. You thought you could eliminate me, steal my territory, and frame innocent people to cover your tracks.”
“You’re senile, old woman,” Vane snarled, signaling his own security guards stationed near the exits. “Guards, clear this room. These guests are trespassing.”
Before Vane’s men could move, Victor and four Moretti enforcers stepped forward, their jackets parting just enough to reveal the unmistakable bulge of firearms. Simultaneously, the massive ballroom doors swung open, and federal agents—led by senior inspectors from the DOJ—marched into the room, led by an arrest warrant signed by a federal judge.
“Marcus Vane,” the lead federal agent announced, flashing a badge. “You are under arrest for racketeering, money laundering, securities fraud, and conspiracy.”
Vane lunged forward, his hand slipping toward his jacket to draw a hidden pistol.
In a fraction of a second, Maya anticipated the move. She grabbed a heavy silver champagne bucket from a nearby table and hurled it directly into Vane’s knees.
Vane crashed hard to the marble floor. Victor was on him instantly, pinning the crime boss face-down while federal agents swarmed the area, slapping handcuffs on Vane and his chief lieutenants.
The ballroom erupted into absolute chaos as socialites fled toward the exits.

Donatella stood calmly amidst the storm, watching Vane being dragged away in chains. She turned to Maya, a proud, approving smile touching her lips.
“Magnificent,” Donatella whispered.
