Chapter 5 - The Gift of Tomorrow

At exactly 7:00 A.M., the heavy doors of the operating suite on the eighth floor slid open.

Orderlies wheeled Dany’s bed down the hallway toward the double doors of the surgical unit. The young boy looked small against the white sheets, but his hands were steady as he clutched his small green stuffed dinosaur.

Clara walked beside the bed, holding his hand tightly, trying to keep her smile bright despite the terrifying anxiety churning in her stomach.

"Is Mr. Vincent here?" Dany asked quietly, looking around the hallway.

"I'm right here, champ," a deep voice called out.

Clara turned her head.

Vincent walked down the hallway toward them. He had washed his face, changed into a crisp dark suit, and though his eyes showed the fatigue of a long night, his posture was immaculate, strong, and unyielding.

Dany’s face lit up with a broad smile. "You came!"

Vincent walked right up to the bed, dropping to one knee so he was at eye level with the young boy. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, polished brass compass on a silver chain.

"This belonged to my grandfather," Vincent said softly, placing the compass into Dany’s small palm. "He was a captain on the Bay. He told me that as long as you hold this compass, you will always find your way back home."

Dany held the compass tightly against his chest, his eyes shining. "I'll keep it safe, Mr. Vincent."

"I know you will," Vincent smiled. He looked up at Clara, taking her trembling hand into his large, warm palm. "And I will be waiting right here with your sister when you come back out."

The surgical team gently guided the bed through the double doors, and the red "OPERATING IN PROGRESS" light bloomed to life above the entrance.

The next four hours were the longest of Clara’s life.

She sat in the private waiting room, her fingers laced tightly with Vincent’s. They didn't speak much. They didn't need to. The steady, reassuring pressure of Vincent’s hand, the warm weight of his arm around her shoulders, gave her a foundation she had never known in her entire life of poverty and struggle.

At 11:15 A.M., the heavy double doors opened.

Dr. Mercer stepped out into the waiting room, pulling his surgical mask down around his neck. He looked tired, but a broad, triumphant smile was stretched across his face.

Clara stood up so fast her chair nearly tipped over. "Doctor?"

Dr. Mercer smiled warmly. "Clara... it was a complete success. The new valve seated perfectly. His heart rhythm normalized instantly once we took him off the bypass machine. He’s in recovery right now, breathing on his own."

Clara let out a loud, shuddering gasp. Her knees buckled under the sheer, overwhelming wave of relief.

Vincent caught her before she could hit the floor. He pulled her up into his arms, lifting her off her feet as Clara buried her face in his neck, sobbing uncontrollably with pure, unadulterated joy.

"He's okay, Vincent..." she wept, her arms wrapped tightly around his neck. "My baby brother is going to live!"

"I know, my love," Vincent whispered softly into her dark hair, his own eyes misty with rare tears as he held her against his heart. "I know."
