Chapter 3 - Shadows of SuspicionThe morning sun rose behind heavy gray clouds, offering no warmth to the city. While Ashley remained stabilized in the pediatric ICU, the story had exploded online.

Local news outlets and social media channels were flooded with clickbait headlines: “DEADBEAT FATHER VANISHES, LEAVES 7-YEAR-OLD TO STARVE.” “NEIGHBORS SPEAK OUT: THE DARK TRUTH ABOUT ANDREW REED.”

Natalie stood in the hospital room, watching Ashley sleep peacefully under the warm blankets. Buddy, the stuffed puppy, sat on the nightstand beside the IV monitor.

Suddenly, Ashley’s eyelids fluttered open. Her large brown eyes searched the room nervously until they landed on Natalie’s uniform.

"Officer... Natalie?" Ashley’s voice was barely a rasp.

Natalie immediately stepped forward, taking the little girl’s tiny hand gently in her own. "I’m right here, sweetheart. You’re in the hospital. The doctors are taking very good care of you."

"Is... is Daddy here?" Ashley whispered, tears brimming in her eyes. "Did he bring my medicine?"

Natalie felt a lump form in her throat. She squeezed Ashley's hand gently. "Not yet, Ashley. But I am searching for him with everything I’ve got. I promise you, I will find him."

Ashley sniffled, clutching Natalie’s hand tightly. "Daddy didn't mean to stay away. He kissed my forehead before he left... he said, 'I’ll be back in thirty minutes, princess. I love you to the moon and back.' He wouldn't leave me..."

"I know he wouldn't," Natalie said softy. "Ashley, can you tell me anything about Daddy’s work? Or did he mention anyone he was worried about?"

Ashley frowned thoughtfully, trying to remember through her exhaustion. "Daddy was working on his computer late at night... he was angry at his boss. He said Mr. Vance was doing bad things at the mountain site. Daddy wrote numbers in his black book and said he was going to show them to the police on Monday."

Natalie’s pulse spiked. Mr. Vance.

Marcus Vance was the CEO of Vance Infrastructure, a powerful local construction tycoon who held multi-million-dollar government contracts for county roadwork and waste management. He was a man with massive political influence—and deep pockets.

Natalie quickly left the hospital room and called her trusted partner, Detective Frank Reyes.

"Frank, I need you to run a background check on Andrew Reed’s employer, Vance Infrastructure," Natalie said into her phone, pacing the hallway. "And find out if Marcus Vance or his company owns a black Ford F-250."

"Natalie, tread carefully," Frank warned over the line. "Marcus Vance donates heavily to the mayor’s campaign and the police union. What are you thinking?"

"I think Andrew Reed wasn't just a father getting medicine," Natalie declared. "He was a structural engineer who discovered something corrupt inside Vance’s operations. The note on his table about Monday morning wasn't just a parent-teacher conference—it was the day he was going to blow the whistle."
