Chapter 5 - THE BOARDROOM BATTLEAt 5:45 AM, the glass-and-steel skyscraper of Carter Capital Tower in Midtown Manhattan pierced the grey morning fog like a jagged razor.

Inside the thirty-fifth-floor boardroom, the atmosphere was suffocating. Eleven board members—billionaire investors, former diplomats, and senior hedge fund directors—sat around a twenty-foot oval table made of polished black granite.

At the head of the table sat Julian Carter.

He was dressed in a bespoke five-thousand-dollar suit, sipping black espresso, checking his gold wristwatch every thirty seconds. On the table in front of him rested the emergency resolution documents that would strip me of my executive chairmanship and transfer full voting control of the Carter Family Trust to him.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” Julian said, standing up and tapping his pen against his glass to gather the room’s attention. “We have three minutes before the official vote. As you know, my cousin Nathan’s health challenges and recent emotional instability have rendered him incapable of managing the fund’s forty-billion-dollar portfolio.”

An elder board member, Arthur Sterling—a man who had been my father’s business partner thirty years ago—frowned deeply. “Julian, Nathan’s cancer is in full remission. The medical reports filed last week were pristine. Why are we pushing this vote at six in the morning without Nathan present?”

“Because Nathan has suffered a severe psychological relapse, Arthur,” Julian lied smoothly, putting on a look of grave concern. “Yesterday, he allowed a homeless child into his estate and claimed an abandoned infant was his biological heir. He is refusing medical assistance. For the safety of the firm’s assets, we must execute Section 14 today.”

Julian picked up his Montblanc pen. “If there are no further objections, I move to sign—”

The heavy double doors of the boardroom didn't just open—they were thrown back against the wall with a thunderous boom that rattled the glass windows overlooking Manhattan.

The entire boardroom gasped.

I walked into the room.

I was dressed in a dark, perfectly tailored three-piece suit. Behind me walked four uniformed officers from the NYPD Financial Crimes Division, followed by two court-appointed legal couriers.

And walking right by my side, her small hand wrapped securely in mine, was seven-year-old Lily. She wore a neat blue dress, her hair brushed neatly into pigtails, holding her head high with quiet, brave pride.

In my left arm, wrapped in a pristine white blanket, I carried my son, Leo.

Julian’s Montblanc pen slipped from his fingers, clattering loudly against the granite table. All the color drained from his face, leaving him looking like a corpse in a expensive suit.

“N-Nathan...?” Julian stammered, his voice dropping into a squeak. “What... what is the meaning of this? You can't bring children into an executive board meeting!”

“I am not just bringing children into a board meeting, Julian,” I said, my voice echoing with absolute power through the silent room. “I am bringing the rightful owner of Carter Capital.”

I walked up to the head of the table, stopping directly across from Julian. I carefully set the white blanket down on the soft leather chair beside Arthur Sterling. The old board member leaned over, looking into the baby’s face, his eyes widening in complete shock as he saw the unmistakable gray-blue eyes staring back at him.

“My God...” Arthur Sterling whispered, his hand shaking as he touched the infant’s tiny fingers. “He has Thomas’s eyes. He’s a Carter.”

“He is Leo Carter,” I declared, looking around the room at the eleven stunned board members. “My biological son. Born three days ago, preserved twelve years ago, and saved from an attempted murder orchestrated by the man sitting at the head of this table.”

“Lies!” Julian screamed, slamming his hands onto the table. “This is a staged farce! He bought an orphan on the black market! He’s trying to stall the vote!”

I reached into my coat pocket and pulled out a sealed digital tablet provided by the Connecticut State Forensic Laboratory. I tapped the screen, projecting the document onto the main multi-million-dollar presentation screen at the front of the room.

STATE FORENSIC LAB REPORT – OFFICIAL DNA MATCH: 99.998% PATERNITY CONFIRMED: NATHAN THOMAS CARTER & LEO CARTER

The boardroom erupted into frantic, chaotic murmurs.

“That’s not all,” I continued, tapping the screen again.

A second set of documents appeared—the complete, decrypted financial audit of Aegis Holdings, showing the four hundred million dollars Julian had stolen from client funds, along with the wire transfers paid to Harrison Vance to execute the cover-up.

“Julian,” I said softly, looking my cousin in the eye. “The NYPD Financial Crimes Unit has already seized your offshore accounts in Grand Cayman. Harrison Vance is currently in federal custody in Stamford, and Dr. Clara Mercer has provided a full video deposition detailing your twelve-year conspiracy.”

Two NYPD officers stepped forward, pulling pair of heavy steel handcuffs from their belts.

Julian looked around the room, desperately searching for a single friendly face among the board members. But every single director—including those who had signed his proxy agreement twenty minutes ago—turned their heads away in utter disgust.

“Julian Carter,” the lead detective said, grabbing Julian’s arm. “You are under arrest for grand larceny, corporate fraud, wire fraud, and conspiracy to commit attempted murder.”

As the steel cuffs clicked around Julian’s wrists, he looked at me, his eyes filled with bitter, pathetic rage. “You think you won, Nathan? You think a billionaire can raise a kid alone? You’re a cold, unfeeling machine! You don't know the first thing about being a father!”

I looked down at Lily, who was holding my hand tightly, and then at my son sleeping peacefully in Arthur Sterling’s arms.

“You’re wrong, Julian,” I said softly, a warm, genuine smile gracing my lips. “I’m not raising them alone. And for the first time in my life... I know exactly what matters.”
