Chapter 5 - The Confrontation in the Glass Lab

Rivera used a heavy steel fire extinguisher from the hallway to shatter the electronic lock mechanism on Cell 04's door, allowing us to rush inside. I immediately knelt beside Sarah, helping Callahan unfasten the heavy steel cuffs binding her wrists to the wall.
"Sarah," I said, holding her bruised hands. "What did Vance do to us? Please... I need to know everything."
Sarah wiped tears from her face, greedily hugging Lily, who buried her tiny face in the nurse's shoulder.
"You were the lead architect, Clara," Sarah explained, her voice frantic and hushed. "Vance hired you six years ago to design this facility. But when you discovered that his 'genetic research' was actually an illegal military contract to clone human subjects for organ harvesting and neuro-weaponry, you tried to destroy the database."
"And Vance caught me," I realized, the horrifying memory finally locking into place like a missing puzzle piece.
"He couldn't kill you," Sarah continued. "Your genetic profile contained the master encryption key to the entire Aegis database. If your heart stopped beating, the servers would automatically purge all his research data. So he subjected you to synthetic neuro-memory suppression—wiping your past, creating a fake identity as an interior designer, and setting you loose in the city where his men could monitor you twenty-four hours a day."
"And Lily?" I asked, my voice trembling as I looked at the little girl.
"Lily was created using your eggs during the initial trials," Sarah whispered, her eyes filled with immense maternal warmth. "She was meant to be the secondary biological key—a backup in case you died. But as she grew... I saw you in her, Clara. I saw her smile, her spirit. I couldn't let Vance break her like he broke you. Three days ago, when Vance decided to terminate the field study and harvest Lily's neural tissue, I stole the master drive, put it in her rabbit bag, and snuck her out of the facility."
"You sent her to find me," I said.
"I knew your suppressed instincts would kick in the moment you touched her hand," Sarah smiled weakly through her tears. "A mother's bond isn't stored in the conscious memory, Clara. It's written in the DNA."
"How wonderfully poetic," a sharp, cold voice echoed through the hallway speakers.
The heavy steel security doors at both ends of the corridor slammed shut with a deafening THUD, locking us inside the sector.
The glass walls of the central laboratory across the hallway suddenly flared with light. Standing inside the observation gallery, surrounded by four heavily armed tactical guards, was Victor Vance. The scar across his right cheek looked jagged and brutal under the harsh fluorescent lights.
"Dr. Vance," Callahan barked, raising his sidearm toward the reinforced glass, though we all knew the glass was bulletproof.
"Officer Callahan, please spare me the theatrical law enforcement routine," Vance said smoothly, speaking into a lapel microphone. "You are standing inside an unregistered underground facility three stories below ground level. You have no jurisdiction here. You have no rescue team coming."
Vance turned his icy gray eyes onto me.
"Hello, Clara," Vance said, a sinister smile touching his lips. "I must admit, I am profoundly impressed. The neuro-wipe was designed to last a lifetime. Yet the moment this little biological unit called you 'Mommy' in a public market, your neural pathways began reconstructing themselves at an exponential rate."
"It's over, Vance!" I yelled, stepping in front of Lily, shielding her from his sight. "We have the master envelope! We know about the database! We know about the precinct!"
"Knowing is irrelevant, my dear," Vance chuckled coldly. "You see, I don't need you alive anymore. Ten minutes ago, my engineers successfully cloned the encryption sequence from Lily's rabbit backpack drive. The backup key is secure in my offshore server."

He reached for a red control lever on the console beside him.
"Which means," Vance added, his eyes narrowing into slits of pure malice, "Subject 409, Nurse Sarah, and our two unfortunate police officers are now officially redundant."
