Chapter 4 - The Midnight JourneyThe drive through the rural interstate toward Chicago was quiet, broken only by the hum of the engine and the steady rhythm of rain lashing against the windshield of Julian’s car. Ana sat in the passenger seat, the leather journal clutched tightly in her lap like a shield against the uncertain future.

The city skyline appeared in the distance like a jagged ridge of glowing amber against the bruised black sky. For Ana, Chicago had always been a ghost story—a place her mother fled from, a metropolis of bright lights and shattered dreams. Now, it was the battleground where the truth would finally come to light.

“You never told me why you stayed in Grimwald all these years,” Ana said softly, breaking the hours of silence as they crossed the city limits. “A man with your resources... you could have lived anywhere in the world.”

Julian kept his eyes fixed on the wet asphalt ahead, his hands steady on the steering wheel. “My family built its wealth on industry, Ana. But my father left behind a legacy of compliance—turning a blind eye to how power operates in this state. When I met your mother, and when I watched her life get systematically dismantled by men who thought they were untouchable, I realized running away didn't solve anything.”

He glanced sideways at her, the dashboard lights catching the green in his eyes. “I stayed to make sure that when the time came, someone was standing in the right place to help you finish what she started.”

Ana swallowed hard, a profound warmth blooming in her chest that had nothing to do with the car heater. “You’ve been protecting me for sixteen years without me even knowing.”

“I promised your mother I would,” Julian said simply.

They parked in a subterranean garage beneath a towering art deco financial building in downtown Chicago. The air was cool and smelled of concrete and exhaust. Using a key tucked inside the back cover of the journal, Julian led Ana through the security checkpoints of a private bank that catered exclusively to old-money estates and confidential trusts.

The vault attendant, an elderly man with wire-rimmed glasses who recognized Julian instantly with a respectful nod, escorted them down a long corridor of reinforced steel cages to private booth number fifteen.

Ana placed the journal on the stainless-steel table. Following the harmonic cipher hidden within her mother’s composition, she punched a sequence of numbers into the electronic keypad built into the wall.

The heavy steel door of the deposit box swung open smoothly.

Inside lay a thick manila envelope sealed with red wax bearing the initials C.R., alongside a flash drive and a handwritten letter addressed in her mother’s familiar, elegant script.
