Chapter 4 - Into the Lion's Den

The execution of Lorenzo’s plan began with a single phone call made from an encrypted line to the one man in the city Lorenzo trusted unconditionally: Dante Vance, his former head of security, who had been stripped of his rank by Carmine and forced into hiding.
When Dante arrived at the cabin late that night, he nearly fell to his knees upon seeing Lorenzo alive.
"Boss..." Dante choked out, his weathered face pale with shock. "We thought... Carmine said he saw your body..."
"Carmine is a fool who relies on cheap poison," Lorenzo said, clapping a heavy hand on Dante’s shoulder. "And this is Harper Miller. She is the reason I am standing here."
Dante looked at Harper with deep, solemn respect, bowing his head slightly. "You have the eternal gratitude of the Falcone family, Miss Miller."
For the next twenty-four hours, the cabin turned into a war room.
Carmine’s estate was a fortress, guarded by thirty armed men and state-of-the-art biometric surveillance. However, Carmine had made one critical mistake: he had hired Grand Prestige Catering—the high-end company that supplied temporary waitstaff for elite mob events—to staff his victory gala.
Harper knew Grand Prestige Catering intimately. She had worked dozens of events for them over the last three years. She knew their shift leaders, their uniform requirements, and most importantly, how easy it was for a temporary waitress to slip past security if she possessed a valid employee badge and kept her head down.
"Carmine’s security team checks badges at the service gate," Harper explained, laying out a sketched map of the estate on the wooden table. "They scan the barcode, search the catering vans, and let the staff through to the basement kitchens. The guards never look at the faces of the servers. They only see the uniform."
"How do we get you inside without alerting Carmine's systems?" Dante asked.
"I won't be Harper Miller," she said calmly.
The next afternoon, Harper sat in front of the small mirror in the cabin's bathroom. She cut her long, mouse-brown hair into a sharp, sleek chin-length bob, dying it a deep, jet-black color. She applied dark, professional makeup, altering the contours of her face, and put on a pair of thick, stylish glasses.
When she stepped out into the living room wearing a crisp, fitted black suit—provided by Dante—Lorenzo stopped mid-sentence.
He walked over to her, his dark eyes scanning her transformation. The quiet, self-doubting waitress was gone. In her place stood a striking, commanding woman who carried herself with absolute poise.
"You look breathtaking, Harper," Lorenzo said, his voice surprisingly soft, his hand lightly touching the lapel of her jacket.
Harper felt her face warm, but she met his gaze squarely. "Let's go take your city back."
At 6:00 PM, a white catering van pulled up to the rear service entrance of the massive Falcone Estate on the outskirts of the city. Rain drizzled from the dark sky.
Harper sat in the front passenger seat next to a nervous catering driver whom Dante had "persuaded" to cooperate.
A guard in a heavy tactical jacket stepped up to the window, snapping his fingers. "Badges."
Harper handed her forged employee badge through the window. Her heart pounded against her ribs, but she kept her face completely impassive, staring straight ahead as if bored out of her mind.
The guard scanned the badge. BEEP. The green light flashed.
He glanced into the van, saw Harper’s heavy frame in her uniform, and scoffed, waving them through without a second look.
"Just another server," the guard muttered to his partner. "Get 'em inside."
Inside the van, Harper let out a quiet breath. Invisible, she thought with a cold, triumphant smile. Just like you wanted.
Once inside the sprawling basement kitchen, Harper separated herself from the busy bustle of cooks and servers. Carrying a tray of champagne flutes, she slipped up the service stairs, entering the grand ballroom of the estate.
The room was filled with over two hundred people—corrupt city officials, police captains, rival mob bosses, and high-ranking syndicate lieutenants. Jazz music played from a stage, and crystal chandeliers cast a golden glow over the sea of tuxedos and silk gowns.
At the center of the room, standing on a raised marble dais, was Carmine. He wore a crisp white tuxedo, drinking vintage wine, holding court like a king who believed he had finally conquered the world.
Harper moved through the crowd like a shadow, placing a tiny, encrypted radio receiver behind a heavy velvet curtain near the main audio control panel.
"Transmitter is in place, Lorenzo," she whispered into a microscopic microphone hidden in her collar.
"Copy that, Harper," Lorenzo’s voice echoed softly in her earpiece from his position in a van parked outside the estate gates. "Stand by the main doors. When the lights go out, do not move. Dante and I will handle the rest."
Harper took her position near the heavy mahogany double doors of the ballroom. She looked up at Carmine, who was stepping up to the microphone on the dais to deliver his victory speech.
"Friends, leaders, partners," Carmine’s smooth voice echoed through the ballroom speakers. "Tonight, we mourn the unfortunate passing of Lorenzo Falcone... but we also celebrate a new era. An era of unity, profit, and new leadership!"
The crowd raised their glasses, cheering.
Carmine raised his glass higher, smiling triumphantly. "To the future!"
Suddenly, the massive crystal chandeliers flickered.
Once.
May you like
Twice.
Then, the entire estate plunged into pitch-black darkness.
