Chapter 3 - The Shadow AllianceThe private wing on the tenth floor of Northwestern Memorial Hospital was guarded by four burly men in tailored coats.

Inside the sunlit room, Maya lay propped up against a mountain of white pillows, color slowly returning to her cheeks as intravenous fluids and monitoring equipment stabilized her frail heart.
Isabella sat beside her bed, holding her younger sister's hand tightly in her own.
"I thought I was going to die without seeing you again, Bella," Maya whispered, her dark eyes shiny with tears as she looked at Isabella. "When those police officers came to the apartment... they said terrible things about you."
"They were wrong, sweetie," Isabella said softly, leaning down to kiss Maya's forehead. "It was all a mistake. You're safe now. The doctors are performing the heart procedure tomorrow morning."
Maya looked nervously toward the door, where Dante Moretti stood silently, keeping watch over the corridor. "Who are those men, Bella? Why are they protecting us?"
Isabella hesitated, glancing at Dante. "They... work for the man whose daughter I helped save. He’s making sure you get the best medical care possible."
The door opened smoothly, and Adrian Valente stepped into the room.
He was dressed impeccably in a charcoal suit, carrying a delicate bouquet of white orchids. The terrifying aura that usually surrounded him seemed carefully subdued in the presence of the frail young girl in the bed.
"Mr. Valente," Isabella said, standing up quickly.
Adrian walked over, setting the flowers on the bedside table. He looked down at Maya with a gentle, surprisingly soft expression.
"You must be Maya," Adrian said, his deep voice polite and warm. "I am Adrian. Your sister is a very brave woman."
Maya smiled shyly. "Thank you for helping us, sir. Bella said you arranged the doctors."
"It is the least I could do," Adrian replied. "Your sister saved the most precious thing in my life. I am merely ensuring that her own precious world remains safe."
He turned to Isabella, nodding slightly toward the hallway. "A word, Isabella."
Isabella followed him out into the quiet, carpeted corridor. Dante closed the hospital room door behind them, giving them privacy.
"How is Emma?" Isabella asked immediately.
"She is back at the estate," Adrian said, his tone turning serious. "The doctors discharged her an hour ago. She is sleeping peacefully. My mother is watching her."
He pulled a thin electronic tablet from his leather briefcase and handed it to Isabella.
"Our intelligence team spent the last twelve hours digging into Marcus Vance’s financial networks," Adrian explained, pointing to the screen. "You were right about the connection. Marcus didn't just wire money to Karen Mitchell. He has been systematically embezzling money from the Valente family’s legitimate logistics holdings for over three years."
Isabella scanned the complex spreadsheets. "Over forty million dollars..."
"Forty-two million," Adrian corrected. "He knew I was auditing the books this month. He knew that once I discovered the missing funds, his life would be forfeit. So he needed a massive, chaotic event to paralyze me and force the board of directors to remove me from command."
"And hurting baby Emma was his distraction," Isabella said, a wave of cold fury washing over her. "He wanted you to kill me in a fit of rage, get arrested or consumed by a blood feud, while he stepped in as the hero to take control."
"Precisely," Adrian said, his gray eyes narrowing. "Marcus believes you are still rotting in Cook County Jail. He has no idea I posted your bail or brought you here. Tonight, he is hosting a private charity gala at the Drake Hotel to celebrate the launch of his new commercial investment fund."
Isabella looked up at him. "What are you going to do?"
"Marcus expects me to be at home, grieving and hunting down rogue housekeepers," Adrian said, a cruel, cold smile touching his lips. "He does not expect me to walk into his gala with the woman he tried to frame standing right by my side."
Isabella felt a sudden chill run down her spine. "You want me to go with you?"
"I want you to crash his party with me," Adrian said, stepping closer to her, his presence intoxicating and intense. "Karen Mitchell will be there. Marcus bought her a ticket to fly to Switzerland at midnight. We are going to expose them in front of every high-society family, judge, and investor in Chicago."
Isabella looked back at the window of Maya’s room. For years, she had been a invisible cleaning girl, pushed around by the rich and powerful, forced to scrape together every penny just to keep her sister alive. Marcus Vance had viewed her as disposable trash—someone who could be framed for a monster's crime without anyone blinking an eye.
She looked back into Adrian Valente's dark, resolute eyes.
"What do I need to wear?" Isabella asked firmly.
May you like
A rare, genuinely impressed smile broke across Adrian's sharp face.
"Dante," Adrian called out without breaking eye contact with Isabella. "Call the stylists. Get Miss Isabella the finest gown in the city. Tonight, she rides with the Valente family."
