Chapter 5 - The Name on the Stone

Three weeks later.
The autumn leaves had turned into a brilliant blanket of crimson, gold, and deep bronze across the grounds of the Oak Brook estate.
In the center of the southern garden, where an ancient white oak tree spread its broad branches over a quiet stone terrace, a simple granite bench had been installed facing the hills.
Damian walked out onto the terrace holding a small wooden box. He was dressed in a dark suit, but his posture was easy, his face filled with an enduring peace.
Nadia was sitting on the bench, wearing a long maroon coat, watching Ava run across the grass with a small golden retriever puppy that Cole had brought to the estate two days ago as a surprise.
Ava’s bright, musical laughter echoed through the crisp afternoon air as the puppy tumbled over its own paws, chasing a fallen yellow leaf.
Damian walked over to the bench and sat down beside Nadia. He set the wooden box between them.
"What's this?" Nadia asked, looking at the carved polished walnut box.
"Something that belonged to my mother," Damian said softly.
He opened the lid.
Inside, resting on a bed of dark blue velvet, was a magnificent vintage engagement ring—a flawless, five-carat oval diamond set in intricate platinum filigree, surrounded by tiny sapphire leaves.
Nadia gasped softly, her hand flying to her mouth. "Damian... it's breathtaking."
"My father gave this to my mother the day I was born," Damian said, picking up the heavy ring, his grey eyes fixed on Nadia’s face. "He told her that a man in our business lives in a world of shadows, but a ring like this is a promise that he will always bring his light home to her."
He took Nadia’s left hand, his fingers warm and steady against hers.
"Four years ago, I didn't get the chance to put this on your finger," Damian spoke, his voice thick with raw, profound emotion. "I let snakes creep into our garden because I was too blind to see the traps around us. But I promise you, Nadia, for the rest of my life, no one will ever come between us again. I want to build a life with you. I want to give Ava a home filled with light, laughter, and security."
He looked deep into her eyes.
"Nadia Reeves," Damian asked softly. "Will you marry me?"
Nadia didn't hesitate. Tears of joy spilled down her cheeks as she smiled, radiant as the afternoon sun.
"Yes," she whispered, her voice overflowing with love. "Yes, Damian. Always."
Damian slid the diamond ring onto her finger. It fit as if it had been made specifically for her. He pulled her into his arms, kissing her deeply, holding her close against his heart as the cool autumn wind rustled the leaves above them.
"Daddy! Mama!" Ava came running up the stone steps, the golden puppy trotting happily at her heels. She looked at her mother’s sparkling hand, her dark eyes wide with wonder. "Pretty ring!"
Damian laughed, reaching down and lifting Ava up into his arms, setting her on his lap between them.
"It's a wedding ring, sweet girl," Damian told her, kissing her soft cheek. "Mama and I are getting married."
Ava’s face lit up with absolute glee. "Are we having cake?!"
"The biggest cake in Chicago," Damian promised with a grin, causing Nadia to laugh softly beside him.
Ava wrapped her small arms around Damian’s neck and her mother’s arm, pulling them into a tight circle. She looked at Damian, her dark eyes shining with pure, absolute trust.

"You're the best big man, Daddy," she whispered softly into his ear.
Damian closed his eyes, holding his daughter and his future wife in his arms, feeling the deep, unbreakable strength of the bond that had restored his soul.
