CHAPTER 2: THE TRUTH ELEANOR HID

Olivia barely slept that night.

The documents she had found kept replaying in her mind.

"Protect Caleb from future claims."

"Protect family assets."

And most disturbing of all:

There was no mention of her.

No mention of the baby.

The next morning, Caleb left early for work.

Eleanor remained in the house.

As usual.

Watching.

Judging.

Waiting.

Olivia tried convincing herself she was overreacting.

Maybe there was a reasonable explanation.

Maybe the papers meant nothing.

Then her phone rang.

Unknown number.

"Hello?"

A woman's voice answered.

"Mrs. Sterling?"

"Yes?"

"My name is Rebecca Hayes. I'm an attorney."

Olivia frowned.

"Okay..."

There was a pause.

"I believe you should know that someone recently contacted our firm regarding a postnuptial agreement."

Olivia froze.

"What agreement?"

"The one designed to limit your legal rights to Sterling family assets."

The room suddenly felt smaller.

"Who contacted you?"

Another pause.

"I probably shouldn't say."

Olivia's voice hardened.

"Please."

The attorney hesitated.

Then quietly answered:

"Eleanor Sterling."

Olivia's heart dropped.

An hour later, she sat alone in her car outside the attorney's office.

Her hands shook.

Rebecca had shown her copies of the inquiry.

Eleanor had spent months exploring legal ways to protect the family fortune.

Not from strangers.

Not from competitors.

From Olivia.

From Caleb's wife.

The mother of his unborn child.

Olivia felt tears sting her eyes.

For three years she had tried to earn Eleanor's approval.

Three years.

And all along, Eleanor had been preparing for the possibility of removing her from the family.

The realization hurt more than she expected.

That evening, Caleb returned home.

Immediately he noticed something was wrong.

Olivia sat quietly in the living room.

The documents lay spread across the coffee table.

"Liv?"

She looked up.

"We need to talk."

His expression changed.

"What happened?"

Without speaking, she handed him the papers.

Caleb read them once.

Then twice.

His face darkened.

"What is this?"

"You tell me."

He continued reading.

The handwritten notes.

The legal inquiries.

The estate documents.

Each page made him angrier.

Finally he stood.

"Mom."

His voice echoed through the house.

Seconds later Eleanor appeared from the kitchen.

Calm as ever.

"What is it?"

Caleb held up the documents.

"What is THIS?"

For the first time, Eleanor looked uncomfortable.

Only slightly.

But enough.

"I was protecting the family."

Olivia stared.

"You mean protecting the money."

Eleanor ignored her.

Caleb stepped forward.

"You hired attorneys?"

Eleanor crossed her arms.

"I was being practical."

"Practical?"

Her composure cracked.

"Do you know what happens to wealthy families every day? Divorces. Lawsuits. Custody battles."

Olivia couldn't believe what she was hearing.

"You think I'm after your money?"

Eleanor didn't answer.

Which was answer enough.

The silence shattered whatever remained of their relationship.

For several moments nobody spoke.

Then Caleb did something Eleanor never expected.

He moved beside Olivia.

Not beside his mother.

Beside his wife.

"You owe her an apology."

Eleanor blinked.

"What?"

"You heard me."

The older woman stared at her son.

"I've spent my entire life protecting you."

"And you've spent three years hurting my wife."

The words hit harder than any shout.

Eleanor looked genuinely shocked.

As though she had never considered that possibility.

Caleb's voice softened.

"But she's my family too."

For the first time, Eleanor had no response.

That night, Olivia sat alone in the nursery again.

The baby's crib stood near the window.

Moonlight filled the room.

Normally it calmed her.

Tonight it didn't.

Because deep down she felt something else.

Something wasn't over.

Not yet.

Eleanor had been planning for months.

People didn't invest that much effort into something they intended to abandon overnight.

And as Olivia rested a hand on her stomach, she noticed movement downstairs.

A light turning on.

A shadow crossing the kitchen.

Then another.

Someone was inside the house.

May you like

And judging by Eleanor's frightened voice drifting up from below...

It wasn't a visitor she had expected.
