Chapter 5 - The Gathering StormThree months later.

The Moretti estate was no longer a silent, gloomy fortress.

It was filled with the sound of screaming children, barking dogs, and constant, vibrant chaos.

My six-year-old daughter, Lily—a fierce, golden-haired whirlwind who had inherited her mother's complete lack of fear—had taken over the mansion with the efficiency of a seasoned general.

Within two weeks of moving into the west wing, she had successfully annexed the triplets.

Instead of three chaotic boys fighting the world, there were now four children operating as a unified military unit. Lily was the supreme commander; Leo was her chief of staff; Julian was her head of engineering; and Mateo was her diplomatic envoy (and primary snack thief).

I was sitting in the glass-walled conservatory overlooking the blooming rose gardens, typing up the weekly scheduling logistics for the children's tutoring, swimming lessons, and horseback riding.

A pair of heavy, warm hands settled gently onto my shoulders.

I leaned my head back, looking up into the dark, impossibly handsome face of Adrian Moretti.

Over the last ninety days, the terrifying mob boss of Westchester had undergone a silent, profound evolution. He still ran his vast commercial empire with an iron fist, but he was home every night by six o'clock. He sat at the head of the dining table, listening patiently as Lily explained the intricate political dynamics of her kindergarten class, while the boys demonstrated their latest Lego creations.

And between Adrian and me, a silent, slow-burning fire had taken root—a deep, magnetic pull that had grown from mutual respect into something powerful, terrifying, and undeniably beautiful.

"You're working too hard," Adrian murmured, his thumb gently massaging the tense muscle at the base of my neck.

"Someone has to keep track of four six-year-olds," I replied, closing my laptop. "Lily informed me this morning that she plans to build a moat around the swimming pool to keep out 'imaginary pirates.'"

Adrian chuckled, leaning down to press a soft, lingering kiss against the crown of my head. The heat of his lips sent a shiver straight down my spine.

"Let her build it," Adrian smiled. "I'll hire a contractor from Queens to pour the concrete."

"You're spoiling her," I warned, turning in my chair to face him. "She asked for a pony yesterday, and Mrs. Gable told me you already called a breeder in Kentucky."

"I have the money, Claire," he said softly, his gray eyes darkening with a intense, fierce affection as he reached out to tuck a stray lock of brown hair behind my ear. "And she gave my sons their smiles back. I'd buy her the state of Kentucky if she asked for it."

I looked at him, my heart swelling so fast it felt painful. I reached up, cupping his jaw, feeling the rough stubble beneath my fingers.

"And what about her mother?" I whispered softly. "What do you buy for the woman who has everything she ever wanted right here?"

Adrian’s gaze dropped to my lips. His posture shifted, drawing me out of the chair until I was standing flush against his chest, wrapped in his powerful arms.

"You buy her a ring," Adrian whispered, his voice dropping into a raspy, intense confession. "You buy her a future. You ask her if she's willing to make an honest man out of a reformed criminal."

My breath hitched. "Adrian..."

Before he could answer, the glass door of the conservatory was slammed open.

Mrs. Gable rushed in, her face deathly pale, holding a silver tray with a sleek, black satellite phone that was flashing with an urgent red light.

"Mr. Moretti," she gasped, her voice trembling. "It's... it's Mr. Vance. From the New York docks. He says... he says the shipment from Palermo has been seized by the Federal Task Force. And... and Dominic Falcone is on line two."

Adrian's entire body instantly locked into place.

The warm, loving father vanished in a fraction of a second. The cold, lethal titan of the Moretti crime syndicate returned, his gray eyes flashing with a terrifying, arctic ice.

Dominic Falcone was the head of the rival Brooklyn syndicate—a man who had been trying to breach Adrian's northern shipping routes for over a decade.

"Take Claire to the panic room in the west wing," Adrian commanded Mrs. Gable, his voice dropping into a terrifying, flat tone.

"Adrian, no!" I said, grabbing his lapels. "What's happening?"

"Dominic thinks I've gone soft because I'm spending time at home," Adrian said, reaching into his suit jacket and pulling out his sleek black pistol, checking the magazine with a practiced, terrifying efficiency. "He thinks he can use my family to force me out of the port."

He looked down at me, taking my face in both of his heavy hands, pressing a hard, fierce kiss against my lips that tasted of iron and promise.

"Stay with the kids, Claire," he whispered against my mouth. "Lock the door. Do not come out until I come get you."

May you like

"Adrian, please be careful!" I pleaded, tears burning my eyes.

"I have five reasons to come home alive now, Claire," he said, stepping back, his eyes burning with an unholy, terrifying light. "Dominic Falcone is about to learn what happens when you threaten a man who finally has something to live for."
