Chapter 5 - The Siege of Key BiscayneThe shockwave from the explosion blew out the floor-to-ceiling glass windows of the library, sending a shower of sharp crystal shards cascading through the room.

In a fraction of a second, Franco tackled me off the couch, covering my body with his own as heavy timber and shattered glass rained down around us. The air instantly filled with thick, biting smoke and the smell of burning fuel.

Outside, the sharp, chaotic popping of automatic gunfire broke out across the front lawn, punctuated by the frantic barking of security dogs and shouts of panic.

“Stay down!” Franco barked into my ear, his weight pressing me safely against the hardwood floor beneath the overturned oak desk.

He reached into his shoulder holster, drawing a sleek black semi-automatic pistol, his face turning into a mask of pure, lethal concentration.

Mateo kicked open the burning library door, his weapon drawn, blood streaming from a cut on his forehead.

“Boss!” Mateo shouted over the din of gunfire. “They used a breaching charge on the main gate! Two armored trucks just pulled onto the driveway! It’s Moretti’s primary enforcement team!”

“How many?” Franco demanded, pulling me up by my arm and keeping me crouched behind him.

“At least twelve men!” Mateo yelled. “They’ve cut the main power lines! The estate is running on emergency generators!”

Franco looked down at me, his gray eyes calm and clear despite the roaring inferno beginning to take hold of the west wing.

“Mateo, get Kayla to the safe room beneath the wine cellar,” Franco commanded.

“No!” I shouted, grabbing Franco’s lapel with both hands. “I am not hiding in a cellar while you fight these men alone!”

“Kayla, listen to me,” Franco said, holding my face in his hands, his voice steady as iron. “Moretti came here tonight for one reason: to kill us both and burn the evidence. The safe room is reinforced steel. You will be safe there. I am going to end this tonight.”

He pressed his lips firmly against mine—a swift, fierce, possessive kiss that tasted of scotch, smoke, and wild promise.

“Go with Mateo,” he ordered softly. “I will come back for you.”

Before I could argue, Mateo grabbed my arm, pulling me through the smoke-filled corridor toward the back staircase.

We navigated through the dark, subterranean hallways beneath the estate as the sound of heavy gunfire echoed through the structure above us. Mateo pushed open a heavy iron door hidden behind a rack of wine barrels, ushering me into a brightly lit, concrete-reinforced bunker filled with security monitors and emergency medical supplies.

“Stay inside, Miss Lawson,” Mateo said, handing me a small silver emergency radio. “Lock the door from the inside. Do not open it for anyone unless you hear my voice or Franco’s over this radio.”

“Mateo, please... be careful,” I whispered, my heart breaking with terror.

Mateo gave me a tight, respectful nod, stepped back out into the hallway, and sealed the heavy iron door shut. The mechanical lock clicked into place with a sickening, final sound.

I stood alone in the center of the reinforced room, staring at the bank of security monitors mounted on the wall.

On the screens, I watched the bloody war playing out across the estate.

Franco moved through the smoke-filled halls like a phantom, utilizing his intimate knowledge of the estate to flank Moretti’s men with terrifying efficiency. Every movement he made was calculated, lethal, and precise. Alongside Mateo and his surviving security team, they methodically neutralized the intruders room by room.

Then, on the screen monitoring the main foyer, I saw Sal Moretti himself step through the shattered front doors, holding a heavy shotgun, flanked by his two top lieutenants.

Moretti was screaming, his face contorted in psychotic rage, kicking open doors, desperate to find us before the Miami police arrived.

On the monitor, I watched Franco step out from behind a marble pillar into the center of the foyer, completely exposed, raising his weapon directly at Moretti.

My heart stopped in my chest.

I grabbed the silver radio, holding it against my mouth, tears pouring down my face.

“Franco...” I whimpered into the microphone. “Please... stay alive.”

On the screen, flashes of gunfire lit up the dark foyer.
