Chapter 5 - The Vance Global Gala

The Grand Ballroom of the National Building Museum was a cathedral of gold, velvet, and betrayal.
Over five hundred of the nation's most powerful political figures, titans of finance, and high-society elites gathered under the towering Corinthian columns for the annual Vance Global Gala—the event where the fifty-million-dollar acquisition by Cole Capital Holdings was to be officially announced and signed.
I walked into the ballroom beside Ethan, wearing a breathtaking emerald-green backless silk gown that trailed behind me like liquid velvet. My diamond snake necklace sparkled under the massive chandeliers. I looked like money. I looked like power.
Cameras flashed endlessly as we walked the red carpet.
"Look at her," whispers echoed through the crowd. "Is that the sister who was kicked out?" "No, darling! Haven't you heard? She’s Ethan Cole’s new wife! She’s taking over!"
Across the ballroom, standing near the grand bar, were my parents. My father looked ten years older, his suit looking loose on him, nursing a drink in total isolation. My mother was frantically looking around, trying to catch the eyes of her former socialite friends, who deliberately turned their backs on her.
And then, I saw the traps set for us.
Standing near Arthur Vance was a tall, impossibly gorgeous blonde woman in a silver sequined dress—Lady Victoria Sterling. Beside her stood Julian Vance, Preston’s bitter half-brother, wearing a sinister smile.
And slipping through the back entrance near the security station was Lauren, wearing a dark trench coat over a cocktail dress, her eyes wild, clutching a thick velvet envelope in her hands.
"They're all here," I whispered to Ethan, taking two flutes of champagne from a passing waiter's tray.
"Let them gather," Ethan murmured, his hand resting securely on the small of my back. "A trap is only useful if all the rats enter at the same time."
At 10:00 PM, Arthur Vance took the stage, tapping his microphone. The crowd fell quiet.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Arthur announced, his deep voice filling the hall. "Tonight marks a historic milestone. Vance Global is finalizing its acquisition by Cole Capital Holdings. Together, Ethan Cole and I will build a financial empire that spans three continents."
Applaus erupted. Ethan stepped onto the stage, approaching the signing podium where two leather folders containing the multi-million-dollar contracts lay open.
"Before we sign," a sharp, aristocratic British voice called out from the front row.
Lady Victoria Sterling stepped forward, her heels clicking loudly.
"Arthur, as a shareholder of Vance Global through my family's trust, I must object," Victoria declared loudly, turning to face the crowd. "This marriage between Ethan Cole and Mia Reynolds is a complete fraud! It was engineered four days ago purely to meet your morality clause! Ethan was engaged to me two weeks ago! Mia Reynolds is a hired fake wife!"
Gasps echoed through the room. My mother gasped loudly, a look of desperate, psychotic hope leaping into her eyes.
Julian Vance stepped up beside Victoria, pulling out a microphone. "She's right, Father! And that’s not all! Lauren Reynolds, Preston’s former fiancée, has evidence that Ethan Cole bribed digital forensic experts to frame her for those text messages!"
Lauren stepped out from the shadows, marching toward the stage, pulling a flash drive from her envelope. "I have the proof!" Lauren screamed hysterically, her eyes bloodshot. "Mia stole my life! She bribed everyone! Ethan Cole is a liar!"
My father stepped forward, shouting, "Expose them! Expose the liar!"
The ballroom erupted into chaos. Security began pushing reporters back. Arthur Vance turned to Ethan, his face dark with confusion and fury.
"Ethan!" Arthur demanded. "What is the meaning of this?!"
Ethan didn't panic. He didn't even blink. He slowly stepped up to the main microphone, looking down at Victoria, Julian, Lauren, and my parents with cold, absolute authority.
"Victoria," Ethan began, his voice amplified across the entire hall. "You are correct about one thing. Our engagement ended two weeks ago. What you failed to mention is why it ended."
Ethan pressed a button on a small remote control in his pocket.
The massive thirty-foot LED screens behind the stage—meant to display the Cole Capital corporate logos—suddenly flickered to life.
A high-definition security video played.
It showed Victoria Sterling in a hotel suite in London, handing over confidential financial documents regarding Vance Global to... Julian Vance.
Victoria turned deathly pale. Julian’s jaw dropped in horror.
"You and Julian engineered a corporate espionage scheme to short Vance Global’s stock before the acquisition," Ethan declared calmly as the crowd gasped in sheer disbelief. "You fled to London to hide the moneytrail. My security team intercepted your accounts forty-eight hours ago."
Ethan clicked the remote again.
The screen shifted.
It was audio and video from an hour ago in the venue's private parking garage. Lauren was standing beside Julian Vance, taking a briefcase full of cash from him.
"Once we ruin Mia and Ethan at the stage," Lauren’s voice echoed clearly through the ballroom speakers, "you give me the rest of the three hundred thousand dollars, Julian. I don't care about Preston anymore. I just want Mia destroyed!"
The ballroom was dead silent.
Preston Vance stepped out of the crowd, staring at the screen, then at Lauren. He walked over to her, his face twisted in utter disgust, took his engagement ring—which she was still wearing on a chain around her neck—and snatched it back.
"You disgusting, psychotic gold-digger," Preston spat, walking away.
"No! No! It's a setup! It's an AI video!" Lauren screamed, collapsing onto her knees on the marble floor, clawing at Julian’s suit jacket, but Julian shoved her away violently, trying to run for the exit.
"Federal agents are waiting outside for you and Julian, Victoria," Ethan announced smoothly into the microphone. "For corporate espionage, fraud, and insider trading."
Four uniformed FBI officers stepped into the ballroom, immediately placing handcuffs on Julian Vance, Victoria Sterling, and a screaming, struggling Lauren.
My mother tried to rush toward Lauren, crying out, "My baby! My baby!" but security guards blocked her path, shoving her and my father back into the crowd of judgment.
Arthur Vance looked at the screens, then at the handcuffed criminals being dragged out of the hall, and finally at Ethan. Old Arthur took a deep breath, walked over to Ethan, and shook his hand vigorously.
"Sign the damn contract, Ethan," Arthur said, his voice trembling with relief. "And thank God you married a woman with brains."
Ethan signed the fifty-million-dollar document under the roaring thunder of applause from five hundred guests.

Then, he turned to the edge of the stage, held out his hand, and pulled me up beside him.
In front of the entire world, under the flashing lights of a hundred cameras, Ethan pulled me close, cupped my face in his hands, and kissed me deeply, passionately, sealing a real love built on the ashes of their destruction.
