Chapter 3 - The Frozen Kingdom

The morning sun of late January offered no warmth, its light reflecting blindingly off the deep snow banks surrounding the Silver Lake district. At 9:00 AM, the grand corporate offices of Walter Bennett & Sons Development were usually bustling with contractors and project managers. But today, the atmosphere inside the glass-and-brick building was dead silent.
Walter Bennett sat at his massive oak desk, his tie loosened, his face a mottled, angry shade of purple. Across from him stood Logan, furiously tapping on a laptop screen, his usual smug composure replaced by a look of pure, unadulterated panic.
"What do you mean it's blocked?!" Walter roared, slamming his bourbon glass down onto the desk, completely ignoring the fact that it was barely mid-morning. "It's a standard corporate account! We have a line of credit backed by the North Jersey holdings!"
"Dad, the system is throwing a Federal Code 403," Logan stammered, his fingers trembling over the keyboard. "It isn't a bank glitch. The Treasury Department has placed an administrative hold on every single routing number associated with our tax ID. The eighty-five thousand we pulled from Jake's account... the bank flagged it as an unauthorized transfer under the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act."
Before Walter could shriek an answer, the heavy double doors to his private office swung open.
I stepped into the room, my winter coat open, revealing the pristine uniform beneath. Behind me stood Major Rebecca Hayes and two uniformed U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Division (CID) special agents, their gold badges displayed prominently against their dark tactical jackets.
Walter stood up so fast his leather executive chair rolled backward into the glass partition wall. "Jake! What is the meaning of this? You walk into my office with federal agents? Have you completely lost your mind? We are your family!"
"Family doesn't leave a six-month-old child to freeze to death on a porch to cover a margin call, Walter," I said, my voice dropping into the quiet, lethal frequency that made Logan instinctively step back from the desk.
Major Hayes stepped forward, placing a thick, red-stamped federal document directly on top of Walter’s pristine leather blotter.
"Mr. Bennett," Rebecca said, her tone carrying the absolute finality of a court martial sentence. "As of 0800 hours today, the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey has issued an emergency asset protection injunction. Because your company utilized funds illegally converted from an active-duty soldier's protected trust, your entire commercial operation is now under federal receivership pending a full forensic audit."
"You can't do this!" Walter shouted, his voice cracking as he looked at the CID agents. "I know the county prosecutor! I’ve funded half the political campaigns in this district!"
"The county prosecutor has no jurisdiction over federal bank fraud and military asset conversion, Mr. Bennett," the lead CID agent stated calmly, pulling a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt loop. "We aren't here to argue the merits of the case. We are here to serve the federal warrants for the seizure of all electronic records and corporate servers."
Logan looked at the handcuffs, then at his laptop, his face draining of all color. "Dad... they have the tracking codes. They know I used the remote access link from the house."
"Shut up, Logan!" Walter snarled, turning his desperate, angry gaze back to me. "Jake... look at me. If you let them do this, the company will collapse by Friday. Everything I built, the legacy I was going to leave to you and your brother... it will all be gone. You'll ruin this family permanently!"
May you like
"The family was ruined the second you changed the locks on my wife, Walter," I said, leaning forward across the desk until I was inches from his face. "I spent eighteen months watching real men protect each other in the dirt while you sat in my house, drank my liquor, and planned how to rob my son. You wanted my home? You can keep the gray walls for the next forty-eight hours. Because by Friday, the federal marshals will be executing the eviction notice on you."
I turned around, stepping out of the office without looking back. Behind me, the sound of Logan’s frantic protests and the sharp, metallic click of steel handcuffs binding my brother’s wrists echoed off the glass walls of the frozen kingdom.
