CHAPTER 1: THE DOCUMENTS THEY THOUGHT WERE HIDDEN

Alejandro barely slept.
Every time he closed his eyes, he saw the bruises on Elena's skin.
The finger-shaped marks.
The fading wounds.
The fear in her eyes when he touched her hand.
None of it looked accidental.
None of it looked recent.
And the worst part?
It had happened while he was thousands of miles away, believing his family was protecting her.
The next morning, Alejandro acted as though nothing had changed.
At breakfast, Victoria poured coffee with her usual elegance.
Ricardo sat at the table scrolling through his phone.
Neither of them seemed worried.
That told Alejandro everything.
They believed Elena was too frightened to speak.
They believed he would trust blood over evidence.
They were wrong.
"How was deployment?" Ricardo asked casually.
Alejandro smiled.
"Long."
Victoria patted his arm.
"Now you're home. Leave business matters to family."
Business matters.
Interesting choice of words.
Alejandro noticed Elena freeze slightly across the table.
Later that afternoon, he drove into town alone.
Using contacts from his military service, he arranged access to property records and corporate filings.
Within hours, the truth began appearing.
The signatures transferring ownership.
The shell company.
The emergency power-of-attorney documents.
The bank authorizations.
Everything pointed to Ricardo.
But one detail stood out.
Every transfer had occurred within a three-week period.
The exact same period Elena stopped appearing in public.
Alejandro's stomach turned.
He requested security footage from a local law office.
The receptionist hesitated.
Then recognized his military credentials.
What she handed him changed everything.
A timestamped recording.
Elena entering the office.
Not alone.
Victoria and Ricardo walked beside her.
Elena looked pale.
Terrified.
And when the attorney placed papers in front of her, Victoria leaned close enough to whisper something.
The camera had no audio.
But Elena immediately started crying.
Then signed.
That evening, Alejandro returned home.
Victoria and Ricardo were in the garden drinking champagne.
Laughing.
Celebrating something.
Perhaps believing they had already won.
Alejandro stood in the doorway watching them.
Neither noticed him.
Not at first.
Then Ricardo raised his glass.
"To family," he said.
Alejandro almost laughed.
Family.
The word had never sounded so false.
Inside the house, Elena sat quietly in the living room.
When she saw him, fear crossed her face.
Not fear of him.
Fear of what would happen if he fought back.
Alejandro knelt beside her.
"You are not alone anymore."
Tears filled her eyes.
"They'll destroy you."
He shook his head.
"No."
A pause.
Then he handed her a copy of the surveillance image.
For the first time in months, Elena looked surprised.
"They recorded it?"
"They recorded enough."
Outside, champagne glasses clinked together.
Victoria and Ricardo continued laughing.
Completely unaware that the first crack had already appeared.
Because Alejandro wasn't gathering revenge.
He was gathering evidence.
And by the time his mother and brother realized it—
May you like
the people they had tried to steal from would be standing in court.
With proof.
