Chapter 5 - The Downfall of the House of Cards

Following the court’s ruling, Sterling Enterprises was placed into court-ordered restructuring. With Eleanor and Julian removed, the board unanimously voted to restore Arthur Sterling as the honorary chairman of the company.

However, Arthur had no interest in returning to the corporate world full-time. Instead, he made a decision that shocked the business community.

He transferred fifty-one percent of the voting shares of the newly reorganized firm—renamed Vance & Sterling Global—into an irrevocable trust created solely for my son, Leo. Furthermore, Arthur appointed me as the sole trustee and Chief Executive Officer of the firm’s auditing and ethics division.

The penthouse, the luxury sports cars, and the pristine estates that Julian and Eleanor once bragged about were auctioned off by federal marshals. The public, which had once turned its back on me due to Eleanor’s lies, now praised my resilience and professional brilliance.

Former friends who had ghosted me after my divorce tried to reach out, sending flowers, congratulations, and invitations to lavish galas.

I ignored every single one of them.

I did not need their shallow validation. The woman who had scrubbed office floors at midnight and proofread legal contracts before sunrise knew exactly who was worth having in her life.

One afternoon, I visited the prison where Julian was serving his sentence. I sat behind the thick glass partition, holding the telephone receiver to my ear as Julian was led out in an orange jumpsuit.

“Vivian...” Julian gasped, his voice cracking. “You came. I thought... I thought you’d never want to see me again.”

“I didn't come for you, Julian,” I said steadily. “I came to bring you the final settlement papers. The legal separation of all ties is complete. You have no legal rights to Leo, and your name has been permanently removed from his birth certificate.”

Julian slumped in his chair, putting his head in his hands, weeping uncontrollably. “I lost everything... my money, my family, my pride.”

“You didn't lose it, Julian,” I corrected him gently. “You threw it away the moment you traded love and truth for greed and malice. I hope you use these next eight years to become a better human being.”

I hung up the phone, stood up, and walked out into the warm afternoon sunlight without looking back.
