Chapter 4 - The Sting Operation

The glass towers of downtown Seattle were shrouded in a thick, gray morning fog as the clock crept toward 9:30 AM. Inside the sixteenth-floor boardroom of Dennis Electronics, the atmosphere was thick with corporate tension. I stood in the service alcove behind the main presentation screen, wearing a tailored charcoal suit Evelyn Marcus had secured for me hours prior. The heavy weight of the decrypted solid-state drives sat securely inside my breast pocket.

Through the double-paned observation window, I watched Reagan walk into the room. She looked immaculate, wearing a tailored black designer dress, her pearl necklace catching the light as she smiled warmly at the assembled board members. Behind her walked Carter, a large flesh-colored bandage covering the fractured cheekbone I had given him the night before. He looked nervous, his eyes darting toward the security personnel stationed at the doors.

Evelyn Marcus sat at the far end of the long mahogany table, her laptop open, her expression a mask of perfect, unreadable professional calm.

"Thank you all for coming on such short notice," Reagan said, taking her seat at the head of the table, placing a heavy leather portfolio in front of her. "As you know, since my dear husband Camden's tragic passing last year, this company has faced significant headwinds. The international consortium, Solis Holdings, has presented an unconditional cash offer of forty-five million dollars for the absolute acquisition of our technology patents. This injection will secure our legacy and protect our shareholders."

"And what about the outstanding federal audit regarding the missing three million from the manufacturing division?" Evelyn Marcus asked, her voice dropping like a stone into the quiet room.

Reagan offered a dismissive, elegant wave of her hand. "The audit has been completed by our internal team, Evelyn. As the courts verified three years ago, the funds were systematically embezzled by my stepson, Finnley, before his conviction. The loss has been written off against our quarterly tax liabilities. There are no further legal impediments to this sale."

"That's a lie," a voice cut through the room.

The security doors at the back of the boardroom clicked open, and I stepped out into the bright light of the room. The murmurs from the board members erupted instantly. Several elderly directors stood up from their chairs in shock.

Reagan’s face transformed from cold confidence to absolute, unadulterated horror. She clutched the edge of the mahogany table so hard her knuckles turned white. "Finnley? Security! What is this felon doing in a private executive session? Remove him immediately!"

The two security guards moved forward, but Evelyn Marcus stood up, raising a certified judicial stay order in her hand. "Stand down. Mr. Dennis is here under my protection as a primary shareholder and corporate executor of the Camden Dennis estate."

"His estate is settled!" Carter shouted, his voice cracking with panic as he pointed a shaking finger at me. "The old man is dead! My mother holds the voting proxy!"

"Your mother holds a fraudulent piece of paper signed by a doctor who is currently being detained by the State Medical Board," I said, stepping up to the secondary presentation terminal and sliding the first solid-state drive into the console.

The massive digital display behind me flickered to life. Instead of the corporate spreadsheets for the Solis Holdings acquisition, the screen displayed a pristine, high-resolution bank registry detailing the transfer of exactly three million dollars from the Dennis Electronics operational account directly into a private wealth fund named C.M. Gambling Management—with Carter Dennis listed as the sole signatory.

"This is the extraction code Carter used while I was serving time for his crime," I announced to the stunned board of directors. "He utilized my old administrative login from a remote server located inside his private residence in Malibu. The IP logs match his personal hardware signature exactly."

"This is fabricated!" Reagan shrieked, her elegant mask completely shattering as she turned to the board members. "Don't listen to him! He's a convicted thief trying to destroy this company out of revenge!"

"Then let's listen to your own voice, Reagan," I replied calmly, pressing the play button on the secondary drive console.

The boardroom speakers activated, and the chilling, recorded conversation between Reagan and Dr. Harrison filled the space. “We need to increase the digitalis dosage, Doctor. He’s starting to ask questions about the manufacturing audits. If he stays lucid enough to attend the parole hearing for Finnley, the whole structure collapses. Make sure the certificate lists cardiac arrest from natural causes.”

The room went dead silent. Two of the oldest board members sank back into their chairs, their faces pale with disgust. Reagan fell back into her seat, her eyes wide, staring at the screen as the trap she had built over four years snapped shut around her neck permanently.
