Chapter 5 - Rebuilding the Empire

Three months passed with the quiet, devastating efficiency of a well-oiled machine.
With Viktor imprisoned, Gregor’s eastern syndicate dismantled, and Marco safely exiled to Italy, Rossi Harbor Holdings underwent a massive restructuring. But the real transformation happened behind closed doors on the forty-second floor.
I no longer wore a faded navy smock. Instead, tailored Italian wool suits—chosen with the same precision I once used to judge carpet stains—hung in my new private office adjacent to Dominic’s.
My mother’s medical treatments were fully paid for, her room at Mount Sinai upgraded to the private wing overlooking Central Park. Her doctors finally diagnosed her chronic fatigue, and she was responding brilliantly to therapy.
Dominic and I worked late into the nights, reviewing international shipping manifests, translating encrypted wiretaps from rival syndicates across Europe, and consolidating the Rossi family’s legitimate business interests. The fear and tension that had once defined the boardroom were replaced by an unspoken, unshakable trust.
One evening in May, as the sunset painted the Manhattan skyline in shades of bruised purple and gold, Dominic stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, swirling a glass of scotch.
"The port commission just cleared our expansion into the Rotterdam terminals," Dominic said without turning around. "Without a single bribe paid. The new compliance framework you drafted is bulletproof."
I sat at my mahogany desk, signing off on a shipment audit. "Criminals are predictable, Dominic. They all speak the same language of greed. Once you translate their lies into plain numbers, they're easy to dismantle."
Dominic turned, walking slowly across the plush rug—the same rug I had once scrubbed clean of blood. He stopped by my desk, placing a thick, leather-bound folder down.
"What's this?" I asked, looking up.
"Property deed," he said simply. "A brownstone in Greenwich Village. Fully paid for. No mortgage."

I raised an eyebrow. "Is this a bonus, or are you trying to bribe your Chief Intelligence Officer?"
"It’s a safe house," Dominic said, his dark eyes holding mine with an intensity that made my breath catch slightly. "And a home. Because I realized last week that I actually enjoy having someone around who understands every word I say—even the ones I don't say out loud."
