Chapter 5 - The Collapse of the EmpireWhile mother and son found their first night of peaceful sleep in years beneath the same roof, the house of cards Colin had built for himself was collapsing with catastrophic speed.

Down in the downtown detention facility, Colin sat in a brightly lit holding cell, his silk bathrobe replaced by an unflattering orange jumpsuit. Across the stainless-steel table sat his high-priced criminal defense attorney, whose expression was a mask of cold professional disgust.

"I don't care about your family drama, Mr. Hayes," the lawyer said, closing his leather folder with a sharp snap. "I care about evidence. And right now, the prosecutor’s office has dropped a binder of federal bank fraud, elder abuse, and wire fraud charges on my desk that would sink the Titanic."

"Federal charges?" Colin squeaked, leaning forward across the table, his eyes wide with horror. "It’s a domestic dispute! We’re brothers! Families fight over property all the time!"

"You didn't just fight over property, Colin," the attorney said coldly. "You forged federal wire transfers, drained your mother’s retirement accounts into offshore shell companies under your wife’s maiden name, and falsified medical records to commit healthcare fraud. The restitution alone totals over two million dollars. My retainer doesn't cover miracles, and quite frankly, my firm is dropping your representation effective immediately."

Before Colin could scream, the door opened, and a bailiff tapped the attorney on the shoulder.

Meanwhile, across town in a chic downtown high-rise apartment, Jessica was frantically stuffing designer handbags and fur coats into garbage bags. The police had already frozen all joint bank accounts tied to Colin’s business ventures. The luxury cars parked outside were seized by the repo men at midnight.

Her phone buzzed incessantly on the kitchen island. It was a text message from an unknown number: Your lease on this apartment is terminated. Eviction proceedings are underway. Vacate by 8:00 AM.

Jessica dropped her phone, sinking to her knees on the hardwood floor as the full, terrifying realization of their ruin washed over her. They had gambled everything on their cruelty, believing that an old woman’s silence and an absent brother’s ignorance would protect their parasitic lifestyle forever. They had mistaken kindness for weakness, and silence for surrender.
