Chapter 4 - The Pariah of the Coastline

While preparations for the grand memorial build were underway, Victoria Sterling was discovering what it truly meant to be an outcast.
By Tuesday, her condo building's management had left a formal notice at her door requesting that she use the service elevator to avoid angry residents and delivery drivers who were constantly leaving negative notes in the lobby. Her local grocery store had politely asked her to place her orders online for delivery rather than shopping in person after three separate shoppers loudly berated her in the produce aisle.
Desperate for an escape, Victoria drove her luxury SUV to her exclusive country club, hoping the serene golf course and high-society refuge would offer solace.
She parked in her usual reserved spot, smoothed down her designer linen skirt, and walked briskly toward the clubhouse entrance.
Before she even reached the glass doors, the club manager—a man named Mr. Henderson whom she had known for a decade—intercepted her on the patio. He held a sleek leather folder in his hands, his expression rigid and professional.
"Victoria," Mr. Henderson said, blocking her path.
"Arthur—I mean, Henderson, thank goodness," Victoria sighed, offering a tight, strained smile. "The savages outside have gone completely mad over a pile of sand. I need to clear my head on the back nine. Get me a vodka martini at the terrace table, please."
Mr. Henderson did not smile. He slowly opened the leather folder and extended a formal document toward her.
"I'm afraid I can't do that, Victoria," he said quietly. "Earlier this morning, the board of governors held an emergency vote regarding your membership."
Victoria’s smile faltered. "My membership? I've been a platinum member here for twelve years! My family donated the fountain in the courtyard!"
"And the board is deeply grateful for past contributions," Mr. Henderson replied flatly. "However, our bylaws explicitly state that any member whose public conduct brings disrepute, scandal, or harassment upon the club and its patrons is subject to immediate revocation of privileges. Effective immediately, your membership is terminated. Your security fob has been deactivated."
She stared at the document in sheer disbelief. "You can't do this! Do you know who my husband is?!"
"Your husband filed for a temporary separation and emergency asset freeze three hours ago, Ms. Sterling," Mr. Henderson replied, his voice devoid of any pity. "He’s staying at a hotel downtown until his divorce lawyers finish drafting the papers. Now, I must ask you to leave the premises before I call county security to escort you off the property."

The ground beneath Victoria felt like it was crumbling away. Humiliation, hot and suffocating, burned in her chest. Without another word, she snatched her designer sunglasses off her face, turned on her heel, and marched back to her SUV, her entire world collapsing into ruins of her own making.
She had wanted to destroy a little boy's sandcastle because it "ruined her view." Now, the view from her own life was nothing but ashes.
