Chapter 6 - A New Empire

The boardroom of Kelletti Maritime Holdings on the fiftieth floor of Manhattan's financial district was bathed in the harsh, golden light of dawn.
Twelve members of the executive board of directors sat around the mahogany conference table in dead silence. At the head of the table sat Salvatore Kelletti, flanked by two armed bodyguards, looking like an aging king who refused to yield his crown.
The double doors swung open with a resounding thud.
Vincent walked in. He wasn't wearing his usual tailored suit; he wore a dark tactical vest over a crisp black shirt, looking every inch the head of a modern empire. And walking right beside him, carrying a secure laptop and a federal warrant, was me.
"What is the meaning of this?" Salvatore snarled, slamming his hand onto the table. "Guards! Throw these trespassers out!"
The two bodyguards stepped forward, reaching for their weapons.
Before their hands even touched their holsters, I moved. I stepped past Vincent, grabbed the lead guard by his jacket lapel, used his own forward momentum to drive him face-first into the mahogany table, and swept the second guard's legs out from under him, pinning him to the floor with my boot on his chest in less than four seconds.
The board members gasped, shrinking back into their leather chairs.
Vincent walked calmly to the head of the table, plugged his thumb drive into the central media console, and transferred the Project Ironclad files onto the massive projection screen behind Salvatore.
"Take a look at the screen, ladies and gentlemen," Vincent said, his voice echoing through the silent room. "That is a complete financial and forensic audit of every illegal shipping route, bribery payment, and murder authorized by Salvatore Kelletti over the past twenty years—including the assassination of our former security auditor, Liam Gallagher."
Salvatore’s face turned the color of ash. He stared at the screen, his hands shaking violently. "You... you can't prove—"
"The U.S. Attorney already has a duplicate copy," Vincent interrupted smoothly. "Federal marshals are currently securing the docks. By noon, Salvatore, you'll be trading this boardroom for a federal penitentiary cell."
Salvatore lunged toward his hidden pocket for a derringer, but Dominic Vale—who had slipped quietly into the room behind us—stepped forward and pinned the old man's arms to his sides, relieving him of the weapon with practiced ease.
"It's over, old man," Dominic muttered.
As federal agents swarmed the boardroom to take Salvatore and his loyalists into custody, the remaining board members sat frozen, looking toward Vincent with a mixture of terror and absolute submission. Kelletti Maritime Holdings was officially under new management.
Later that afternoon, the rain finally stopped over New York, leaving the streets shining beneath a clear blue sky.
I stood on the private balcony of the fiftieth-floor office, looking out over the Hudson River toward the piers where cargo ships moved with orderly, computerized precision.
Footsteps approached softly behind me.
Vincent stepped out onto the balcony, handing me a steaming cup of black coffee. He leaned against the glass railing beside me, looking out over the city.
"You know," Vincent said quietly, "technically, you're still on the payroll as my head waitress."
I took a sip of the coffee, feeling the warmth spread through me. I turned to look at him, a faint smile touching the corners of my mouth. "Does the new job come with a raise?"
May you like
"Higher than you think," Vincent replied, his gray eyes softening as he met my gaze. "And you won't have to dodge any more crystal glasses."
"Good," I said, leaning back against the railing. "Because my shoes are finally clean."
