PART 2 — The Brother Who Smiled While Betraying Me

The ICU doors slammed shut.

Through the narrow glass window, I could see doctors surrounding Hannah's bed.

Orders flew through the room.

Machines beeped frantically.

Nurses moved with terrifying urgency.

And all I could do was stand there.

Helpless.

For the first time in years, I hated feeling powerless.

I could buy buildings.

Negotiate million-dollar contracts.

Make politicians return calls.

But none of that mattered when the woman I loved was fighting for her life behind a locked hospital door.

Ryan stood beside me.

Silent.

Waiting.

He knew me well enough not to speak.

Not yet.

Twenty minutes later, Dr. Lawson emerged.

Her surgical mask hung around her neck.

Her expression looked exhausted.

I immediately stepped forward.

"How is she?"

The doctor exhaled slowly.

"Stable."

The word hit me like oxygen.

For the first time that night, I breathed.

"The baby?"

Dr. Lawson nodded.

"The baby's heartbeat is strong."

I closed my eyes.

Thank God.

But the doctor wasn't finished.

"Mr. Callahan, your ex-wife didn't end up here because of a random medical emergency."

My stomach tightened.

"What do you mean?"

Dr. Lawson glanced toward the nurses' station before lowering her voice.

"Someone has been threatening her."

Ryan and I exchanged a look.

The doctor continued.

"When she arrived, she was severely dehydrated and malnourished."

She folded her arms.

"This wasn't neglect."

A pause.

"This was fear."

Fear.

The word echoed through my mind.

Fear explained everything.

Why Hannah hadn't contacted me.

Why she'd disappeared.

Why she'd hidden the pregnancy.

Why she looked like she'd been surviving instead of living.

And suddenly my brother's text message felt far more sinister.

Ryan pulled me aside.

"We need to talk."

The second we entered a private consultation room, he placed a folder on the table.

The folder looked thick.

Too thick.

"What is this?"

Ryan's expression darkened.

"Everything I found on Hannah's phone."

I opened the folder.

And my world tilted.

Bank records.

Screenshots.

Photos.

Emails.

Messages.

There were dozens of threatening texts.

Stay away from Jack.

Forget about the baby.

Leave New York.

Stop asking questions.

You're being watched.

Every message came from anonymous numbers.

But several payments connected them all.

The money led back to one person.

Michael Callahan.

My younger brother.

For a long moment I simply stared at the evidence.

"No."

The word slipped out automatically.

Because Michael wasn't just my brother.

He was my best friend growing up.

The person who stood beside me at my wedding.

The person I trusted more than almost anyone.

Ryan leaned forward.

"Jack."

I looked up.

"We checked further."

The tone of his voice made my chest tighten.

"What else?"

Ryan slid another document across the table.

Financial reports.

Company transfers.

Account activity.

At first glance they looked ordinary.

Then I saw the numbers.

Millions.

Missing.

My blood ran cold.

"What am I looking at?"

Ryan's jaw clenched.

"Someone has been moving money out of Callahan Holdings."

I felt sick.

"How much?"

Ryan hesitated.

"Forty-eight million dollars."

The room went silent.

Forty-eight million.

Not stolen all at once.

Taken gradually.

Over months.

Hidden carefully.

Designed to avoid attention.

The kind of theft only an insider could pull off.

The kind of theft requiring complete access.

My brother's access.

I sat back slowly.

Trying to process it.

The threats.

The pregnancy.

The missing money.

Suddenly everything connected.

Michael hadn't wanted Hannah away from me for her safety.

He wanted her gone because she was a problem.

A witness.

Someone who might expose what he was doing.

Ryan spoke quietly.

"We think there's more."

My eyes narrowed.

"What?"

Ryan handed me another photograph.

This one hit harder than everything else.

Because it showed Michael meeting someone.

Someone I recognized immediately.

Anthony Moretti.

My oldest enemy.

A man who had spent years trying to destroy me.

The same man who sent the funeral flower.

The same man who threatened Hannah.

And according to the timestamp, the meeting happened six weeks ago.

My own brother was working with the man who wanted me dead.

For the first time all night, anger replaced shock.

Cold anger.

Dangerous anger.

The version of me I had spent years trying to leave behind slowly returned.

Ryan saw it happen.

His expression changed.

Because he knew exactly what that look meant.

"Jack."

"What?"

"Don't do something you'll regret."

I laughed.

Not because anything was funny.

Because it wasn't.

"Regret?"

I looked down at the evidence.

At the messages threatening Hannah.

At the proof of betrayal.

At the records showing millions stolen.

"My brother threatened the mother of my child."

Ryan remained silent.

"My child."

The words sounded strange.

New.

Powerful.

For sixteen weeks I didn't even know the baby existed.

And now someone had spent months terrorizing both mother and child.

No.

Not someone.

Michael.

Hours later, just before sunrise, Hannah finally woke up.

I was sitting beside her bed.

Holding her hand.

The moment her eyes opened, she looked confused.

Then frightened.

Then relieved.

"Jack?"

I stood immediately.

"Hey."

Tears filled her eyes.

For several seconds she simply stared at me.

As if she couldn't believe I was actually there.

Then she whispered:

"You know."

I nodded.

Her hand moved instinctively to her stomach.

"The baby?"

"Okay."

A tear rolled down her cheek.

She closed her eyes.

"Thank God."

Neither of us spoke for a moment.

Then she looked at me again.

"I wanted to tell you."

The words shattered me.

Because I knew she was telling the truth.

Hannah wasn't manipulative.

She wasn't dishonest.

If she'd hidden the pregnancy, she had a reason.

"What happened?" I asked softly.

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Michael found me."

My heart stopped.

She nodded.

"Two weeks after the divorce."

Another tear.

"He knew about the baby."

I squeezed her hand.

"He said your enemies knew too."

The room felt colder.

"He told me if I contacted you, people would get hurt."

Her voice broke.

"He said I was protecting the baby by staying away."

I looked away.

Unable to hide the guilt.

Because the lie worked.

It worked because Hannah knew the dangers surrounding my life.

She believed she was keeping our child safe.

And she'd suffered alone because of it.

Then she said something that changed everything.

"Jack..."

"What?"

Her expression became frightened.

"Michael wasn't working alone."

I froze.

"What do you mean?"

She swallowed hard.

Then whispered five words.

"They were planning something bigger."

A knock interrupted us.

Ryan stepped inside.

His face looked grim.

Very grim.

"What happened?"

I asked.

Ryan looked directly at me.

Then delivered the worst news yet.

"Michael disappeared six hours ago."

The room went silent.

"He emptied the accounts."

My stomach dropped.

Ryan continued.

"And according to our sources..."

A pause.

"He's heading for the docks."

I immediately understood.

The docks weren't about escape.

They were about war.

Because hidden inside those warehouses sat the final pieces of my empire.

May you like

And if Michael reached them first...

Everything would burn.
