Chapter 5 - The Hammer of Justice

Four months later.

The United States Federal District Court in Baltimore was packed to absolute capacity. Journalists, military officers, financial analysts, and members of the local community filled every row of wooden benches.

I sat in the front row, wearing my pristine Army Service Uniform, holding my mother’s hand.

Nancy sat beside me, dressed in an elegant navy coat. Her fractured bones had healed thanks to months of physical therapy, and though she wore a new pair of gold-rimmed glasses, her posture was proud, regal, and entirely unbroken.

At the defense table sat Ryan Vance and Arthur Pendelton, both dressed in navy blue federal detention jumpsuits, their hands and ankles bound by heavy iron chains.

The jury had deliberated for less than two hours.

The Honorable Judge Evelyn Carter took the bench, striking her heavy wooden gavel twice. The courtroom fell into absolute, breathless silence.

"Will the defendants please rise for sentencing," Judge Carter commanded.

Ryan and Pendelton stood up, their heads bowed, their legal counsel standing silently beside them.

Judge Carter looked over her half-moon spectacles at Ryan, her eyes burning with profound moral contempt.

"Mr. Ryan Vance," Judge Carter began, her voice echoing clearly through the high-ceilinged room. "Over the course of this trial, this court has witnessed an appalling display of greed, narcissism, and calculated evil. You took an oath of marriage to Lieutenant Colonel Kelsey Vance, promising to love and honor her family. Instead, you spent months plotting the financial destruction and physical murder of her mother."

She picked up the formal sentencing document.

"You showed no remorse when you left a seventy-one-year-old woman bleeding on her kitchen floor. You showed no remorse when you lied to police officers, attempting to smear her sanity. And you showed no remorse when you attempted to sell vital national defense assets to foreign brokers for personal gain."

Judge Carter leaned forward, her voice cut like a razor.

"On Count One—Attempted Premeditated First-Degree Murder—you are hereby sentenced to Life Imprisonment without the possibility of parole. On Counts Two through Six—including Treason, Burglary, and Aggravated Assault—you are sentenced to an additional forty years, to be served consecutively at the ADX Florence Federal Supermax Facility."

BANG!

The sharp crack of the gavel sounded across the courtroom like a cannon shot.

Ryan gasped, his knees giving out beneath him as he collapsed back into his chair, sobbing hysterically. He turned his head toward the gallery, looking at me with wide, terrified eyes, begging for a shred of pity.

I did not blink. I did not move. I looked at him with the cold, absolute detachment reserved for a neutralized threat.

"Take the prisoners away," Judge Carter ordered.

Federal marshals grabbed Ryan by his arms, hauling him out of his chair. The heavy clanking of his leg irons rattled against the hardwood floor as he was dragged through the side door, his pitiful blubbering fading into the dark concrete corridors of the courthouse forever.

As the courtroom erupted into applause, my mother turned to me, tears of quiet relief shining in her eyes.

She wrapped her arms around me, holding me tightly against her shoulder.

"It's over, my sweet girl," Nancy whispered, kissing my cheek. "The nightmare is finally over."

"Yes, Mom," I said, holding her hand firmly in mine. "Justice is finally done."
