Chapter 3 - The Lockdown of the Estate

By 10:00 a.m., the storm had broken, leaving behind a blinding, pristine white landscape that stretched across Bellweather County. But inside the corporate headquarters of Northstar Freight, the weather was considerably less peaceful.

According to my lead corporate investigator in the field, Walter and Daniel had arrived at the office at 8:30 a.m. expecting to execute the forced signature transfer with a local notary they had bribed. Instead, they found two state marshals standing at the front glass doors with a federal asset-seizure warrant, locking the executive suites and freezing all corporate credit cards, petty cash accounts, and digital payroll systems.

I sat in the hospital conference room, working in absolute synchronization with my legal team in Chicago, when my secure messaging app pinged. It was an encrypted update from Detective Mara Quinn, my primary liaison with the State Attorney General’s Special Investigations Unit.

SEC-AG UPDATE:

- Emergency protective custody order for Elena Sterling: APPROVED & ISSUED.

- Bench warrants for Walter Vance (Grand Larceny, Elder Abuse, Wire Fraud): ISSUED.

- Daniel Vance: Subpoenaed as a co-conspirator; pending formal indictment.

- Physical asset freeze on the Vance family estate on Crestview Lane: ACTIVE.

I closed the laptop and walked back into my mother’s room. She was sitting up against the pillows, eating a light broth brought by the nurse, looking marginally better though still visibly shaken.

"Mom," I said gently, sitting on the edge of the mattress. "We need to talk about your house."

She looked down at her bruised hands. "Walter changed the locks yesterday. Even if we go back, we can't get inside. And all my things... your father’s photographs, the old heirlooms..."

"Your house is safe," I interrupted with a reassuring smile. "In fact, as of ten minutes ago, a state court judge signed an emergency protective order granting you sole exclusive possession of the Crestview Lane property, backed by a mandatory eviction order for Walter Vance."

Mom’s good eye widened in sheer disbelief. "Eviction? But how? The deed is in both our names!"

"It was," I corrected gently. "Until I filed an emergency motion for marital asset preservation based on documented domestic violence and attempted financial coercion. The court has placed the property into a temporary protective receivership managed by my firm. Walter has exactly two hours to pack his bags under the supervision of state marshals, or he will be arrested on the spot for violating the restraining order."

Before she could reply, the door swung open, and Sheriff Henderson walked in. He wasn't eating Walter’s eggs anymore. In fact, he looked intensely uncomfortable, holding his campaign-branded winter hat in his hands, shifting his weight nervously from one boot to the other.

"Ms. Sterling," the sheriff began, clearing his throat awkwardly. "I... I just received the paperwork from the Attorney General’s office regarding Walter Vance."

I stood up, walking slowly toward him until our eyes were level. I didn't smile. I didn't soften my expression.

"Did you find the paperwork clear, Sheriff?" I asked, my voice cutting through the silence of the room. "Or do you need me to call the federal oversight board in Washington to explain why your department failed to respond to an emergency elder abuse call placed from this hospital at 3:15 a.m.?"

Sheriff Henderson flinched, his face turning a mottled shade of red. "Now hold on, Ms. Sterling. We were dealing with severe blizzard conditions across the county—"

"Save it for the grand jury investigators, Sheriff," I cut him off sharply. "Right now, your only job is to accompany my legal team and two state marshals to the Crestview Lane estate to ensure Walter Vance vacates the premises without removing a single piece of my mother’s personal property. If so much as a silver spoon is missing when we inspect the inventory, I will personally add your name to the obstruction of justice docket."

The sheriff swallowed hard, nodded stiffly, and turned on his heel without another word.
