Chapter 4 - The Legal Avalanche

The fall from grace for Ray and Daniel was not a slow decline; it was a vertical drop into absolute ruin. Deprived of their stolen wealth, the two men found themselves trapped in a freezing, hostile world they had spent decades exploiting.

By 5:00 p.m., the news of the Vance Development scandal had broken across every local news network. The image of St. Catherine’s Hospital being placed under federal audit, combined with the allegations of elder abuse and forgery, completely destroyed Ray’s remaining social standing. His business partners instantly vanished, issuing public statements condemning his actions and dissolving all joint ventures.

Daniel, completely panicked and unable to access his luxury apartment, drove his repossessed sports car until it ran out of fuel on the side of the highway. Because his credit cards were entirely dead, he was forced to walk three miles through the freezing slush back to the family mansion on the ridge, his expensive designer sneakers soaking through within minutes.

When he finally arrived at the iron gates of the estate, he found them locked tight. A new security team, dressed in tactical black uniforms with the Northstar logo on their chests, stood guard behind the reinforced bars.

“Let me in!” Daniel screamed, banging his frozen fists against the cold iron. “This is my house! My name is on the family registry! You can't lock me out in the cold!”

The lead guard, a burly man with a scarred jaw, looked down at Daniel with absolute indifference. “Mr. Vance, this property is currently a secured crime scene under federal investigation. Your name has been removed from the registry by order of the primary trustee, Evelyn Vance. Move away from the gate immediately, or you will be detained for harassment.”

A cab pulled up to the curb a few yards away, and Ray stepped out, his cashmere coat stained with slush, his face pale and haggard. He had spent his last hundred dollars on a ride from the courthouse after his attorneys refused to take his calls without a twenty-thousand-dollar cash retainer.

“Daniel,” Ray shook, his teeth chattering violently as he grabbed his stepson’s arm. “We... we need to go to the police station. We need to tell them Valerie is holding your mother hostage. If we can get Evelyn to sign an affidavit saying she was confused, we can drop the charges...”

“She’s not confused, Ray!” Daniel yelled, turning on his stepfather with a feral, desperate rage. “She was never confused! You told me this would be easy! You told me Valerie was just a stupid clerk who wouldn't notice! Look at us! We’re freezing to death outside our own house while she sits in a penthouse!”

Before Ray could answer, two state patrol cruisers pulled up to the curb, their red and blue lights reflecting brilliantly off the snow bank.

Detective Ramirez stepped out of the lead vehicle, holding a pair of heavy steel handcuffs. “Ray Vance? Daniel Vance?”

“Yes! Detective, thank God!” Ray cried, stepping forward. “My stepdaughter has illegally seized our assets——”

“Save it for the magistrate, Mr. Vance,” Ramirez said coldly, turning Ray around and slamming his hands behind his back.

“You are both under arrest for conspiracy to commit grand larceny, felony elder abuse, reckless endangerment, and forgery. You have the right to remain silent. I suggest you use it.”

As the steel cuffs clicked shut around Daniel’s wrists, he looked up at the main house, his eyes filled with a sudden, devastating realization. The very darkness and freezing cold they had forced their mother to endure had finally come for them. And this time, there was no one coming to save them.
