Chapter 4 - The UnravelingThe fallout from the boardroom arrests sent shockwaves through New York's financial and social elite.

By the next morning, the front pages of the New York Post and the Wall Street Journal were dominated by the same headline: ARMSTRONG EMPIRE COLLAPSES: FATHER AND SON ARRESTED IN MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR FRAUD AND ABUSE SCANDAL.
The photographs of Robert and Arthur Armstrong being led out of their Midtown skyscraper in handcuffs were broadcast across every national news network. The story of the brave mother who uncovered a network of corporate corruption to save her abused daughter captivated the public imagination.
While the media circus raged outside, my home in Brooklyn became a sanctuary of peace and healing.
My brownstone was small compared to the cold marble mansion in the Upper East Side, but it was filled with warmth, sunlight, and life. The kitchen smelled of freshly brewed coffee, baked apples, and cinnamon.
Olivia sat at the sturdy oak kitchen table, wearing an old oversized sweater of mine, watching Matthew paint a picture with watercolors at the small kids' table in the corner. For the first time in three years, the tight, anxious lines around her eyes had smoothed away. Her skin was regaining its color, though the bruises on her neck remained as fading reminders of the nightmare she had survived.
Eleanor Vance sat across from Olivia, sliding a stack of legal documents across the table.
"The emergency court hearing concluded an hour ago," Eleanor announced with a warm smile. "The judge granted a full, permanent order of protection for you and Matthew against both Robert and Arthur Armstrong. Furthermore, given Robert's pending federal indictment and his complete financial insolvency, the court has granted you temporary sole legal and physical custody of Matthew, with zero visitation rights for Robert."
Olivia let out a long, shaky breath, her hands trembling as she touched the legal papers. A single tear rolled down her cheek, but this time, it wasn't a tear of fear—it was relief.
"Is it really over, Eleanor?" Olivia asked, her voice small and delicate. "He can't take Matthew away from me?"
"He can't even come within five hundred feet of you, sweetheart," Eleanor reassured her gently. "His legal team folded the moment the federal judge denied his bail. Robert is currently being held at the Metropolitan Correctional Center awaiting trial. The DA has added felony domestic assault and child endangerment charges to his docket."
Olivia looked up from the papers and met my eyes. I was standing near the stove, pouring tea into two porcelain cups.
She stood up, walked across the kitchen, and threw her arms around my neck. She held onto me so tightly I could feel her body shaking with quiet, cathartic sobs.
"I'm so sorry, Mom," Olivia wept into my shoulder. "I was so weak. I let him hurt me, I let him threaten me, I almost let him destroy our lives because I was too scared to fight back..."
"Shh," I whispered, wrapping my arms around her and stroking her hair, pulling her close just as I had when she was a little girl. "You weren't weak, Olivia. You were surviving. He isolated you, he manipulated you, and he used your love for your son as a weapon against you. That wasn't weakness, my sweet girl. That was a trap."
"How did you do it?" she asked, pulling back slightly to look into my face. "How did you find the courage to stand up to them?"
I smiled softly, wiping a tear from her cheek. "Because when a mother sees her child being hurt, fear stops being an option. Your father left us the tools, but you gave me the strength."

Matthew dropped his paintbrush, ran over to us, and wrapped his tiny arms around both of our legs, giggling happily. "Group hug!" he shouted.
I reached down and lifted him into my arms, holding my daughter and my grandson close against my heart. The cold, rainy night at Le Petit Palais felt like a distant nightmare. The storm had passed, but our fight wasn't entirely over yet. There were still loose ends to tie, and a legacy of trauma to dismantle.
