Chapter 5 - The Trap at the ClinicA Mother’s ShieldThursday morning arrived under a pale, frosty sun.

The Berkshire Pediatric Center sat on a quiet, tree-lined street three miles from the Bennett estate. A light dust of snow covered the parking lot.

At 10:15 a.m., a silver Volvo SUV pulled into the rear handicap space. Lauren stepped out from the driver’s side, wearing a heavy navy wool coat and boots. She walked around to the passenger side, opening the door to unbuckle Noah and Lily from their double stroller setup.

From across the street, inside a blacked-out pickup truck, Cole watched her through binoculars.

His heart pounded wildly against his ribs. Seeing her look so calm—so healthy, her skin glowing, her dark hair tied back in a neat, confident knot—ignited a fire of raw envy in his chest. She didn't look like a woman whose life had been shattered. She looked like a woman who had been set free.

"Now?" Vance asked from the driver's seat of the truck, adjusting his gloves.

"Now," Cole commanded, opening his door. "While she’s loading the stroller."

Cole sprinted across the slushy parking lot, his boots crunching against the ice.

"Lauren!" he shouted.

Lauren froze. She turned around slowly, her hands resting protectively over the stroller handles. She didn't scream. She didn't run.

She simply stood there, her dark eyes looking at him with a cold, piercing clarity that stopped Cole in his tracks five feet away.

"Cole," she said, her voice entirely devoid of fear.

"Give me the babies, Lauren," Cole panted, his breath rising in thick white clouds. "Give them to me, and we can end all of this! I'll drop the counter-suits! We can fix this!"

"Fix what, Cole?" she asked softly. "Fix the seven years you spent making me feel like nothing? Fix the bruises you left on my arms? Or fix the fact that you left two sick infants on Christmas Eve to lay in a hotel bed with another woman?"

"I was stressed!" Cole yelled, stepping closer. "You drove me to that! You were always complaining, always crying—"

He reached out a gloved hand to grab the stroller handle.

CLICK.

The sound was small, but it carried the unmistakable weight of heavy steel.

Two tall men in dark charcoal coats stepped out from the back of the Volvo SUV. A second later, a unmarked state police cruiser pulled up behind Cole’s escape truck, cutting off all exits.

Vance immediately raised his hands inside the truck, stepping out with his palms open. "I'm out! I'm out!"

Cole whirled around, panic surging through his veins. "What is this?!"

Arthur Harris stepped out from the clinic’s front doors, holding a tablet computer that was currently streaming a live audio-video feed directly to the Berkshire County District Attorney.

"We knew you purchased a burner phone in Queens three days ago, Cole," Arthur said calmly. "We knew you hired Mr. Vance. And we knew you would attempt something this foolish."

Lauren stepped forward, looking down at her ex-husband as two state troopers approached him from behind.

"You always thought I was weak, Cole," Lauren said quietly, reaching down to tuck a wool blanket closer around Noah’s chin. "You thought because I was quiet, because I was patient, that I was helpless. But patience isn't weakness. It was just time giving you enough rope to hang yourself."

"Lauren! Please!" Cole screamed as the troopers grabbed his arms, pulling them behind his back and snapping cold steel handcuffs around his wrists. "Think about our family!"

"We are a family, Cole," Lauren said, looking into his wild, desperate eyes one last time. "Noah, Lily, and me. You were just a bad storm that finally passed."
