Chapter 5 - The Glass Shatters

"Vanessa! Drop it!"

Grant Whitmore stood in the doorway, his face pale, his eyes wide with shock and fury. Behind him stood Marcus, holding a tablet displaying the live extraction log from the study's server, alongside two uniformed police officers.

Vanessa’s facade cracked for a fraction of a second, her eyes darting between Grant and the police. But she quickly recovered, lowering the gun slightly and plastering on a look of dramatic panic.

"Grant! Thank God you're here!" she cried, her voice instantly shifting to a trembling sob. "This... this crazy girl, Lily, she snuck back into the house! She was trying to kidnap Sophie! I caught her trying to drag her out the back door. I had to defend her!"

"Save it, Vanessa," Marcus spat, stepping forward. "We have the raw security footage from November 14th. The unedited files. We saw you enter Helena's room using Grant's bypass code. And we have the digital forensics showing you accessed Grant’s personal vault two days prior to steal that code."

Grant looked at Vanessa, his expression a mixture of profound betrayal and sickening realization. "You told me you were at your apartment that night. You told me you didn't know anything about how Helena passed so suddenly."

"Grant, darling, they're lying!" Vanessa pleaded, taking a step toward him, her hands shaking. "They’ve fabricated this! They want to ruin us, ruin the merger—"

"I didn't fabricate this," a small, clear voice broke through the tension of the room.

Everyone froze.

Sophie stepped out from behind me, her chest heaving, her small hands balled into fists. She looked directly at her father, tears streaming down her face, but her voice was strong, resonant, and filled with a pain that had been locked away for far too long.

"She put the white powder in Mommy's medicine," Sophie said, her voice echoing in the silent corridor. "I saw her. She told me if I ever told anyone, she would make Daddy disappear next. That's why I couldn't talk, Daddy. I wanted to save you."

Grant fell to his knees, a strangled sob escaping his throat. The realization of what his ambition and blindness had cost his daughter washed over him like a tidal wave. "Sophie... oh my god, Sophie..."

Vanessa saw the shift in the room. Realizing she had lost, her expression turned feral. She raised the gun again, aiming it directly at Sophie. "If I'm going down, I'm taking everything you love with me!"

"No!" I screamed.

I threw myself physical over Sophie just as a shot rang out. The deafening crack echoed off the marble walls.

But the bullet didn't hit us. Marcus had lunged at Vanessa, tackling her to the ground. The gun skittered across the floor as the two police officers rushed in, pinning Vanessa to the ground and ratcheting handcuffs around her wrists.

"Get off me! You have nothing! You're nothing!" Vanessa screamed, her elegant composure entirely shattered as she was dragged down the hallway, her emerald dress trailing in the dirt, her curses fading into the distance.
