Chapter 6 - The Scars We CarryBy 7:30 AM, the OR suite on the fifth floor was a hum of synchronized precision.

Piper stood at the scrubbing station, her hands lathered in antibacterial soap up to her elbows, watching the digital clock tick down the seconds. The water cascaded over her skin, washing away the last lingering remnants of the weekend—the smell of the lake, the humiliation of the party, and the heavy burden of her family’s past expectations.
She walked through the swinging doors of Operating Room 3.
The surgical team was already prepped and waiting. Nurse Henderson nodded as Piper approached the sterile table, laying out the scalpel, forceps, and clamp sets with practiced rhythm.
“Morning, Dr. Vance,” Henderson said cheerfully. “Ready for the dual-valve repair on our twelve-year-old cardiac intake?”
“Born ready, Heather,” Piper replied, stepping up to the table and holding her hands out as an assistant slipped her into sterile surgical gloves.
She looked through the reinforced glass observation window down into the gallery. For a second, she thought she saw two familiar figures standing up there in the shadow of the lecture hall—her mother and brother, watching not with mockery or condescension, but with quiet, awestruck reverence.
Whether they were actually there or just a projection of her own healing mind didn't matter.
Piper took a slow, deep breath, centering her focus entirely on the heart beating on the monitor before her. The past was a scar, fully healed and mapped out beneath the skin. But the present belonged entirely to the patient on the table, and the future belonged to a woman who no longer needed anyone’s permission to be brilliant.

“Scalpel,” Piper requested, her hand steady, absolute, and unshakeable.
The blade met flesh with surgical precision, and the healing began.
