Chapter 4 - The Bitter Truth

By 8:00 a.m. the following morning, the financial world of Nashville was in chaos.

As predicted, Northern Alliance’s cancellation of the fifty-million-dollar liquidity bridge had sent shockwaves through Mitchell Enterprises' board of directors. By 9:15 a.m., the company's stock had opened down forty percent, triggering an automatic trading halt. George Mitchell was desperately trying to schedule emergency meetings with every major lender in the city, but none of them would take his calls. The whisper had already gone out: The Carters have blacklisted the Mitchells.

In the midst of this chaos, the social media post showing me drenched in the grass had gone viral, but not in the way Vanessa’s friends had intended.

A local independent journalist had recognized the "homeless woman" as Eleanor Carter, the reclusive billionaire philanthropist who had funded the state's largest children's hospital and multiple homeless shelters. The public backlash was immediate and devastating. The hashtag #BoycottMitchell had begun trending nationally, with thousands of people expressing disgust at Vanessa's cruelty.

At 11:30 a.m., Ethan’s assistant informed him that Vanessa was standing in the lobby of his office building, refusing to leave until he saw her.

"Send her up," Ethan said, looking at me. I was sitting in the corner of his office, reading a report. "Let's finish this, Mom."

When Vanessa entered the office, she looked unrecognizable. The flawless, arrogant bride-to-be from the previous afternoon was gone. Her hair was messy, her eyes were bloodshot and swollen from crying, and she wore a plain hoodie and jeans to avoid the reporters gathered outside the building.

"Ethan," she sobbed, rushing toward his desk. "You have to stop this! Your mother... she is destroying my father's company! We are going bankrupt! The bank is foreclosing on our house! Please, you loved me! You can't let her do this to us!"

Ethan didn't stand up. He sat behind his desk, his expression completely flat. "Your father's company was already bankrupt, Vanessa. They were using my distribution contracts and my mother's banks to hide their fraud. My mother didn't destroy your family... she simply stopped saving you."

"But I love you!" Vanessa cried, reaching out to touch his desk. "We can start over! I'll apologize to your mother on my knees! I'll do whatever she wants! Just please, don't throw away our future!"

"Our future?" Ethan let out a dry, humorless laugh. "There is no future, Vanessa."

"What about our baby?"

The words fell like a bomb in the quiet office.

Ethan went completely rigid. I closed my folder and stood up, walking slowly toward the desk.

Vanessa looked at Ethan, her expression a mix of desperation and manipulative hope. "I took a test this morning, Ethan. I’m pregnant. You’re going to be a father. You can't abandon the mother of your child. Think about what the press will say if you ruin the family of your own baby!"

Ethan stared at her, his jaw trembling. For a second, I could see the pain and confusion in his eyes. He looked at me, his silent plea for guidance breaking my heart.

I smiled gently, walking over to Vanessa. "A baby, Vanessa? Truly?"

"Yes!" Vanessa snapped, her old arrogance briefly flaring up. "And Ethan would never let his own child grow up in poverty! You have to stop the foreclosure! You have to reinstate the loan!"

I reached into my pocket and pulled out a small piece of paper, placing it on the desk between them. It was a printed invoice from a highly exclusive private clinic in downtown Nashville, dated just three days ago.

"This is the medical invoice from your personal account, Vanessa," I said softly. "My security team retrieved your medical records last night as part of our standard post-engagement audit. According to this document, you received a long-term contraceptive implant on Tuesday afternoon. An implant that makes pregnancy medically impossible for the next three years."

Vanessa’s face went entirely gray. Her mouth opened and closed, but no sound came out.

"You lied about being pregnant to manipulate my son into saving your family's failing business," I said, my voice dropping to an icy, quiet whisper. "You are not just a bully, Vanessa. You are a fraud."

Ethan stood up, his face dark with a rage I had never seen in him before. He looked at Vanessa as if she were a toxic parasite.

"Get out," Ethan said.

"Ethan, please—"

"I said, get out!" Ethan slammed his hand on the desk, the sound echoing like a gunshot. "If you are not out of this building in thirty seconds, I will have the security guards drag you out in front of the cameras waiting downstairs. And I will personally release the full, unedited video of you spraying my mother to every news outlet in the country."

Vanessa looked at Ethan, then at me, realizing that her final, desperate lie had failed. She turned around and practically ran out of the office, her heels clicking frantically on the hardwood floor.

Ethan sank back into his chair, covering his face with his hands. I walked over and gently placed my hands on his shoulders, letting him feel my warmth, my strength.

"It’s over, Ethan," I whispered. "The truth is out. You are free."
