Chapter 3 - The Scramble for SurvivalBy midnight, the grand Sterling estate had transformed from a glittering wedding venue into a ghost town of ruined ambitions.

The guests were long gone, fleeing into the night like rats from a sinking ship. Only the core legal team, Clara, her parents, and the disgraced Sterling mother and son remained on the terrace.
Olivia sat rigidly on an iron patio chair, her hands clutching her designer handbag as if it were a life raft. Her empire—the lavish galas, the high-society board seats, the untouchable status she had lorded over everyone for decades—had evaporated in less than six hours.
Ethan was pacing frantically near the edge of the pool, his phone pressed tightly to his ear, his voice rising in desperate panic.
"What do you mean you won't take my call, Robert?! I’m an executive vice president at Sterling Global! ... No, listen to me, just check the liquidity—"
The line clicked dead. Ethan lowered the phone, staring at the screen in absolute disbelief before dropping it onto the stone paving. It shattered into a spiderweb of glass.
"They blocked my corporate card," Ethan whispered, his voice trembling. He turned toward Clara, his expression twisting from shock into bitter, pathetic pleading. "Clara... please. We’ve been together for eighteen months. We talked about a future. We talked about a family. You can’t just throw me out on the street like this! It was a mistake—Mom was out of line, I know she was, but we can fix this!"
Clara looked at him, feeling nothing. Not anger. Not sorrow. Just the hollow emptiness of realizing she had wasted a year and a half of her life trying to fit into a mold built by a man who saw her as an inferior accessory.
"You didn't just stand by while your mother humiliated my parents, Ethan," Clara said coldly. "You laughed along with her behind my back. I found the text messages on your old phone three weeks ago. You called my father a 'grease-monkey mechanic' and told your friends you were only marrying me to secure the trust distribution early."
Ethan flinched as if he had been struck. The color drained entirely from his face. He opened his mouth, but no words came out.
Julian stepped forward, holding a legal notice toward Olivia. "Mrs. Sterling, pursuant to the emergency restructuring of the estate, you have forty-eight hours to vacate this property. The deed has reverted entirely to the Vance-Sterling Foundation."
"Vacate?" Olivia shrieked, standing up so fast her chair screeched against the stone. "This is my home! I raised my son here! You can't throw me out on the street like a stray dog!"
May you like
"You should have thought about how you treat stray dogs before you pushed my mother into a pool," Clara said calmly. She turned to her parents, offering each of them an arm. "Mom, Dad, let’s go home. My father’s truck is parked outside. It’s a lot more honest than anything built on these grounds."
As Clara walked away from the terrace, arm in arm with the two people who had loved her unconditionally her entire life, she didn't look back once. Behind her, the echoing shouts of Olivia’s fury faded into the cool night air, swallowed by the darkness.
