Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

By 11:00 PM that evening, the penthouse office of Vance & Sterling looked like a war room. The traditional mahogany furniture was buried beneath stacks of financial ledgers, corporate organizational charts, and digital servers brought in by a team of elite, black-suited forensic accountants.
Marcus Sterling, a sharp-featured man in his late sixties with silver hair and a ruthless reputation in corporate litigation, paced behind Victoria’s desk. He threw a thick leather-bound folder onto the blotter.
"You were right, Victoria," Marcus said, rubbing his eyes. "Thorne isn't just a monster at home; he's a thief in the boardroom. We ran the deep-dive audit on the St. Jude’s VIP expansion fund. Over the last four years, three hundred million dollars allocated for state-of-the-art neonatal units were diverted through an offshore holding company called 'Aegis Medical Leasing' registered in the Cayman Islands. The sole beneficiary is Dr. Julian Thorne."
"He’s embezzling from his own charity boards," Victoria said, not looking up from her laptop. Her glasses reflected the blue light of a thousand rows of transaction histories. "He’s using the hospital’s prestige to secure massive private endowments from wealthy families, then kick-backing the construction costs through fraudulent equipment leases. Typical white-collar arrogance. He thought he was too smart to get caught because he’s the darling of the medical community."
"It gets worse," Marcus added, leaning over the desk. "We pulled the internal logs for the hospital's pharmacy division. There’s a massive discrepancy in restricted anesthetics—specifically paralytics and high-grade sedatives. Thorne has been personally overriding the electronic distribution cabinets using his administrative override codes. He’s not just stealing money, Victoria. He’s hoarding pharmaceuticals that don't leave a trace in a standard toxicology screen unless you know exactly what to look for."
Victoria’s hands froze over the keyboard. Her jaw tightened until the muscles in her neck stood out like iron cords. He said he’d make sure I never woke up after my C-section.
The bastard wasn't making idle threats. He had already acquired the chemical means to execute her daughter on an operating table under the guise of a medical mishap. A sudden, catastrophic reaction to anesthesia. An undetectable dosage of a fast-acting paralytic causing respiratory failure during a routine procedure.
"He’s planning a execution," Victoria whispered, the realization settling into the room like a physical weight.
"We can take this to the FBI right now," Marcus suggested, reaching for his phone. "With this financial data and the pharmacy logs, they’ll raid his office by tomorrow morning."
"No," Victoria snapped, her voice cutting through the room like a whip. "If the FBI moves in, Thorne gets tipped off. He’ll panic, he’ll stall, or worse, he’ll accelerate his timeline. He still has physical custody of my daughter in that penthouse. If he senses the walls closing in, he might take her out before the federal warrants can be executed. He has to feel completely safe until the very moment the trap snaps shut."
"Then what’s the play?" Marcus asked.
Victoria stood up, walking to the panoramic window overlooking the city. She could see the distant red glowing sign of St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital burning against the night sky.

"We don't just arrest him, Marcus. We strip him of every single shield he has," Victoria said, her reflection in the glass looking cold and timeless. "We target his reputation first. Tomorrow morning is the annual St. Jude’s Benefactors Gala. The entire medical board, the governor, the city’s highest donors—they will all be in the ballroom. Julian expects to give a speech about his vision for the future of medicine."
She turned back to Marcus, a terrifying smile gracing her lips. "We are going to rewrite his script."
