Chapter 5 - The Crucible of Dawn

The violence that followed was fast, brutal, and absolute.

Callum ducked beneath the swinging barrel of Marcus’s shotgun as it discharged into the concrete ceiling with a deafening BLAM!

In a single, terrifying surge of motion, Callum slammed the heavy flat of the fire axe into Marcus’s chest, driving him backward out of the panic room threshold into the wine cellar corridor.

Marcus screamed as he hit the concrete floor, his shotgun flying into the darkness. Callum didn't give him a fraction of a second to recover. He dropped the axe, mounted Marcus, and rained down a succession of heavy, devastating blows with his bare fists.

The sound of cracking bone echoed off the wet stone walls. Marcus’s pleas for mercy were cut short as Callum’s absolute, righteous fury stripped away every ounce of restraint he possessed.

"Callum! Stop! Callum, please!" I shrieked from inside the vault, tears streaming down my face as I clutched my agonizingly cramping stomach. "Callum, the baby! Something's wrong with the baby!"

The mention of our child broke through the blood-frenzy like a bucket of ice water.

Callum froze mid-strike, his blood-soaked right fist hovering above Marcus’s unconscious, shattered face. He took a long, ragged breath, his chest heaving. He dropped Marcus like trash, wiped his bloody knuckles across his trousers, and turned back to the panic room.

The lethal warlord was gone in an instant.

"Nola!" Callum gasped, scrambling on his knees into the vault, completely ignoring his own injuries.

I fell to my knees on the carpet, gasping as a contraction tore through my lower abdomen with blinding force. Warm fluid soaked through the bottom of my red uniform dress.

My water had broken.

"Callum..." I sobbed, clutching his bloody shirt, my body shaking uncontrollably. "It's too early... I'm only seven months... it's too early..."

"Frank! Get up!" Callum roared over his shoulder, grabbing a clean white sheet from the medical supply shelf and wrapping it securely around my lower body. "Frank! Call the medical transport! Tell them the private trauma helicopter lands on the front lawn in five minutes or I kill every paramedic on their payroll!"

Frank, clutching his bandaged shoulder, dragged himself to the wall comms console and began screaming coordinates into the radio.

Callum scooped me up into his arms, lifting my heavy frame as if I weighed nothing at all. He held me close against his blood-stained chest, stepping over Marcus’s limp body as he carried me up the stone stairs, through the ruined, bullet-riddled mansion, and out into the cool, gray light of the breaking dawn.

The estate grounds were silent now. Victor Vance’s mercenaries had been completely neutralized by Callum’s security forces, their weapons piled in the center of the courtyard. Victor Vance himself sat handcuffed in the back of a police cruiser, watching in absolute defeat as Callum carried me past the gates.

In the center of the front lawn, the heavy blades of a high-speed medical helicopter cut through the morning mist, its landing lights flashing red and white across the wet grass.

As the paramedics rushed forward with a gurney, Callum refused to let them touch me until he had laid me down himself.

He held my hand tight as they strapped me in, his dark eyes brimming with unshed tears—the first time I had ever seen the most feared man in the city weep.

"Don't leave me, Callum," I gasped through the agony of another contraction.

"I'm right here, Nola," he whispered, kissing my bloody knuckles, his voice breaking with profound, raw emotion. "I'm right here. I'm never leaving you again."
