Chapter 2 - The Audit StrikesThe music in the ballroom had swelled back up thirty minutes later, a thumping bassline that vibrated through the floorboards as guests moved on to the champagne toast. They had already forgotten about me. To them, I was just a wet nuisance that had been swept under the rug.

I hadn't left the estate. Instead, I had slipped through the service corridors, borrowed a dry, oversized black blazer from a sympathetic catering manager who despised my father’s arrogant tipping habits, and stationed myself in the private executive lounge overlooking the main reception hall.

From my vantage point behind the tinted glass, I watched the festivities unfold below.

Vanessa was holding court near the three-tier wedding cake, laughing radiantly as her new husband, Chad—a man whose family owned three struggling car dealerships and a mountain of debt—kissed her cheek for the cameras. My father was at the podium, clinking his champagne glass with a silver spoon, preparing to deliver a speech about family legacy, sacrifice, and success.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” Dad boomed into the microphone, his voice echoing off the crystal chandeliers. “If I may have your attention. As I look around this magnificent room, seeing my beautiful daughter Vanessa begin this glorious new chapter... I am reminded that true success is built on a foundation of unyielding strength, vision, and impeccable financial standing. Hale Events Group has never been stronger. We are expanding, we are conquering, and today, we celebrate not just a marriage, but an empire!”

Polite, enthusiastic applause rippled through the room. My mother beamed with pride, dabbing her eyes with a lace handkerchief.

Suddenly, the heavy double doors at the main entrance of the ballroom didn't just open—they swung wide with a heavy, deliberate thud.

Three men in dark charcoal suits entered the room. They weren't wedding guests. They moved with the cold, synchronized precision of federal marshals and senior forensic auditors. At the front of the group walked Daniel, my attorney, carrying a sleek leather briefcase, flanked by two regional directors from Vanguard Financial.

The DJ’s music stuttered and died, leaving an awkward, ringing silence in the massive hall.

Dad blinked from the podium, his smile freezing halfway across his face. “Excuse me? Security? Can someone escort these gentlemen out? This is a private—is this a prank? Who ordered telegrams?”

Daniel didn't smile. He walked straight down the center aisle, ignoring the gasps and whispers of bewildered guests, until he stood right at the base of the elevated stage.

“Richard Hale?” Daniel’s voice rang clear and authoritative through the silent room.

Dad gripped the edges of the podium, his knuckles turning white. “I am Richard Hale. What the hell do you think you’re doing? My daughter’s wedding reception is—interfering with this event is a criminal offense, I’ll have you arrested!”

“You won't be having anyone arrested today, Mr. Hale,” Daniel said smoothly, opening his leather briefcase and pulling out a thick stack of legal documents stamped with high-priority judicial seals. “I am here representing the primary creditor and lienholder of Hale Events Group. Effective immediately, pursuant to Section 14, Clause C of the master restructuring agreement executed on November 12th, the company is in default.”

A collective gasp echoed through the room. Uncle Gary dropped his fork against a china plate with a sharp clatter.

“Default?” Dad laughed nervously, though beads of sweat were already forming on his forehead. “That’s impossible! Our accounts are fully funded! We just cleared a three-hundred-thousand-dollar vendor line for this very reception!”

“Precisely, Mr. Hale,” Daniel replied, his tone chillingly polite. “Using corporate funds to finance a personal, non-business social event constitutes an illegal asset diversion under federal commercial lending codes. Furthermore, our preliminary audit, conducted remotely within the last hour, has frozen all operating accounts, payroll lines, and credit facilities associated with Hale Events Group.”

Vanessa dropped her champagne flute. The crystal shattered against the marble floor, the sharp sound cutting through the stunned silence like a gunshot.

“Dad?” Vanessa whispered, her voice trembling as she rushed toward the stage. “What are they talking about? What is happening to my wedding?”
