Chapter 3 - The Shadow of Vane

By noon, the news of the hostile takeover of Vance Construction had sent shockwaves through the Dallas real estate market. The local business journals were running breaking news alerts: Vance Construction Collapses into Receivership; Mystery Firm Takes Control.

Inside the corner executive office that had belonged to my father just three hours ago, the locks were being changed. Technicians in black uniforms were replacing the server hard drives, while Clara’s team swept the walls for hidden listening devices.

I stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, looking out over the city skyline, holding a bottle of cold water. The high of confronting my brother was beginning to fade, replaced by the reality of the war we had just declared.

Adrian walked into the office, stripping off his suit jacket and tossing it over the leather couch. He unbuttoned his top collar, looking tired but fiercely focused.

"Your father and Marcus are currently at their estate, frantic," Adrian said, walking over to stand beside me at the window. "Marcus called Julian Vane's assistant seven times in the last hour. Vane hasn't taken a single one of his calls."

"Vane won't help them," I said, leaning my shoulder against the glass. "Julian Vane survives by cutting off infected limbs the moment they show rot. Marcus is rot."

"And what about us?" Adrian asked, turning his body toward me. He looked down at me, his blue eyes sharp and searching. "Vane knows someone with real financial muscle just stripped his shell company of its leverage. He’s going to start digging. It won't take his investigators long to discover that 'Alden Vale' doesn't exist."

"Then we hit him before he finishes digging," I said. "On the silver drive I gave you last night, there's a secondary file folder named Project Bluefin. Did you look at it?"

Adrian nodded, his expression darkening. "I saw the name. It’s the waterfront development project my father was building ten years ago."

"It's not just a past project," I explained, turning to face him fully. "Julian Vane is resurrecting the exact same development under a new name: The Grand Plaza at Trinity River. It’s a two-billion-dollar luxury commercial center. He’s holding a private investor reveal party tomorrow night at his private estate in Preston Hollow."

Adrian’s jaw set into a hard line. "He rebuilt his new crown jewel on top of the grave of my father's legacy."

"And he invited every mayor, city inspector, and private equity billionaire in the state to buy pre-sale shares tomorrow night," I added. "If Vane sells those pre-sale shares, he secures five hundred million dollars in non-refundable capital, making him completely untouchable."

Adrian was quiet for a long moment. He walked over to the desk, picked up a pen, and spun it between his fingers—a habit I was beginning to recognize as his deep-thinking mode.

"If we crash that reveal with the original forged safety reports from ten years ago, Vane will just claim your father forged them to smear him," Adrian said. "We need something direct. Something linking Vane’s current Trinity River project to the exact same illegal toxic soil dumping he used ten years ago."

"I have the soil testing reports," I said smoothly.

Adrian stopped spinning the pen. He looked up, his eyes widening slightly. "What?"

A slight, victorious smile touched my lips. "Three months ago, Marcus brought home an internal environmental audit for the Trinity River site. Vane made Vance Construction perform the preliminary grading. The soil is contaminated with industrial heavy metals from an old chemical plant. Vane knew about it, suppressed the report, and ordered Marcus to pave over it with five feet of concrete to pass city inspection."

Adrian stood up slowly, walking toward me with a look that crossed between disbelief and profound respect. "Evelyn... you didn't just study forensic accounting. You built a nuclear arsenal inside your family's office."

"I told you, Adrian," I said softly, my voice filled with three years of accumulated pain and quiet determination. "I spent three years being treated like an invisible house ornament by men who thought I was too weak to fight back. I made sure that when I hit them, they wouldn't get up."

Adrian stopped right in front of me. Slowly, deliberately, he reached out and touched my jawline—his fingers warm, gentle, and real, a stark contrast to the fake rubber skin he had worn twelve hours ago.

"You are extraordinary," he whispered, his thumb lightly brushing across my cheekbone.

My heart did a strange, sudden flip in my chest. The breath caught in my throat. For a second, the high-stakes corporate war faded away, leaving only the intense, electric connection between us.

"We need an entry strategy for tomorrow night's party," I said, my voice barely above a whisper, trying to maintain my professional composure despite the heat spreading through my face. "Vane's estate security is military-grade."

Adrian didn't pull his hand away immediately. He looked down at my lips, then back into my eyes, a slow, breathtaking smile curving his mouth.

May you like

"Vane invited the elite of Dallas society," Adrian said, his voice quiet and smooth. "And as of this morning, you are the wife of the mysterious billionaire Alden Vale—one of the largest private landholders in North Texas. He didn't just invite us, Evelyn..."

Adrian leaned in closer, his breath warm against my ear. "...he sent a personal VIP invitation to our estate two hours ago. He wants Alden Vale’s money. We’re going to give him his destruction instead."
