Chapter 6 - A Home Filled with Color

The spring sun of Nashville was warm and sweet, turning the rolling hills of the estate into a vibrant, emerald-green paradise. The empty, cold air of the limestone mansion was gone, replaced by the scent of fresh-cut grass, baking bread, and the happy, chaotic sound of laughter.

Six months after the trial, the Vance family’s empire had been completely liquidated. Julian Vance was currently facing federal charges for his involvement in the money-laundering scheme, while Marcus had been sentenced to ten years in prison for bribery and domestic abuse conspiracy.

Maria had been granted full, uncontested legal and physical custody of Sophia, with her maiden name officially restored on all government records. She no longer wore the gray scrubs of a housekeeper.

She wore a beautiful, flowing white linen dress that caught the warm spring breeze as she stood in the center of the mansion’s formal garden.

Ethan walked out of the French doors, carrying a large silver tray with cups of fresh lemonade. He had changed, too. He no longer wore the stiff, dark suits of a defensive billionaire. He wore a simple navy polo and jeans, his face relaxed, his blue eyes warm and filled with a peace that had finally found a permanent home.

He set the tray down on the wooden table, walking over to Maria and wrapping his arms around her waist from behind. He leaned down, kissing her neck, his chest pressing against her back.

"The gardens look beautiful today, Maria," Ethan murmured, his voice deep and filled with affection.

Maria turned in his arms, her eyes shining as she looked up at him. "They look beautiful because they’re alive, Ethan. This whole place is alive."

"It's alive because of you," Ethan said softly. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box. He opened it, revealing a stunning, custom-designed ring featuring a rare, brilliant yellow diamond surrounded by a halo of tiny, sky-blue sapphires.

"Ethan..." Maria gasped, her hands flying to her mouth, tears of joy filling her eyes.

"I spent twenty-eight years living in a gray world, Maria," Ethan said, his voice trembling with a rare, beautiful emotion as he slipped the ring onto her finger. "You and Sophia gave me color. You gave me a home. I want to spend the rest of my life protecting that color. Will you marry me?"

"Yes," Maria sobbed, throwing her arms around his neck, kissing him with a deep, passionate love that had been forged in the fire of their struggle. "Yes, a million times, yes."

"Look! Look, Noodle!"

Sophia’s voice broke the quiet moment.

The three-year-old girl, wearing a bright yellow sundress, was running across the manicured lawn, her stuffed rabbit tucked firmly beneath her arm. In her hand, she held a large, messy paintbrush dripping with bright pink watercolor paint.

She ran up to Ethan, stopping at his knees, looking up at him with her wide, innocent dark eyes.

"Mr. House Man—no, Ethan!" Sophia corrected herself with a big, toothy grin. "You look very happy today. But your face is still too serious. Can I make you pretty again?"

Ethan slowly knelt down on the grass, ignoring the damp earth on his pants. He looked at the pink paint on her brush, then looked at Maria, who was watching them with a radiant, tearful smile.

"Go ahead, Sophia," Ethan said, a beautiful, genuine laugh escaping his lips as he closed his eyes. "Make me pretty."

With a happy squeal, Sophia pressed the wet brush against his cheek, painting a large, messy pink flower that stretched from his jaw to his ear.

And as the warm spring sun began to set over the hills of Nashville, casting a golden, rainbow-hued light over the massive mansion, the empty halls were finally, completely filled with the only thing that money could never buy.

Color. And love.
